Veganuary begins at the start of the year where budding vegans tryout a new lifestyle by changing the way they eat. Meat is swapped for tofu, and cows milk is swapped for almond milk as participants try to become vegans, and if successful tend to continue the practice throughout the year.
Travelling as a vegan can be immensely difficult. It’s still a fairly new way of living, so often countries don’t tend to cater to those who don’t eat milk, eggs and meat. However, Hotel Follower have created the Global Vegan Index based on a number of factors including number of vegan restaurants in the country, consumption of animal products, consumption of meat, animal welfare and the popularity of veganism, to give people a comprehensive ranking of the best countries for those choosing the vegan life.
In top spot came Thailand with a massive choice of 334 different vegan restaurants to choose from, only 41.7kg of milk and egg consumption per person a year and a very high score for animal welfare.
In the top five, four of these were countries within Asia who often don’t consume as much animal produce as the rest of the world. Their low dairy consumption and high amount of vegan restaurants allowed them to bag top spots.
