GP warns: Why you might experience ED at Christmas

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that affects many men at some point in their lives. It can occur as a one-time occurrence or become a regular issue. While it may feel embarrassing, it’s important to know that ED is both common and treatable.

Although it is often associated with aging, it can affect men as young as 18 years old. There are many factors which can cause erectile dysfunction, some of which are influenced by lifestyle choices such as stress and diet. To help us understand more, practicing GP, Dr Neel Patel from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, outlines some of the modern lifestyle factors that can contribute to ED.

What causes ED?

“ED can have both physical and psychological causes. In most cases it is due to a reduced blood flow to the penis. However, external factors including some lifestyle choices can also cause erectile problems.

“An increased number of young men are experiencing ED, and may think physical problems such as low testosterone is the cause, however it’s rare that this is the reason. There are a wide range of factors that could be causing it. Relationship issues, anxiety and depression, medication, diet and not getting enough exercise can all play a part.

“It’s important to assess your lifestyle and any psychological issues before presuming there is something physically wrong. Seeking medication for ED and performance issues but not addressing the initial cause will only prolong the issue.”

7 lifestyle choices that could lead to ED

  1. Sedentary lifestyle

“Lack of regular physical activity and excessive sitting can lead to poor blood circulation and reduced overall cardiovascular health. Regular exercise is beneficial for maintaining healthy blood flow and can help reduce the risk of ED.

“In today’s society, it is easy to feel connected to those around us without actually meeting in person. Working from home culture, social media and cost of living concerns can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle. It’s important to get out and get our bodies moving not only to reduce the risk of ED but for our overall health.”

  1. Unhealthy diet

“A diet high in processed foods, refined sugars, unhealthy fats, and low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues, which are known risk factors for ED.

“As erectile dysfunction is connected to blood flow, it’s important to have healthy blood vessels. Eating nutritious foods can help lower the chances of having common vascular problems caused by high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, and obesity.”

  1. Smoking and vaping

“Tobacco use and smoking is not only dangerous to overall health but can also damage blood vessels and restrict blood flow, including to the penis. Smoking has been strongly linked to an increased risk of ED.

“Similarly to smoking, there is some research to suggest that vape users are more likely to experience ED than men who have never vaped. Vaping has become a huge trend, especially amongst young people. Although vaping is seen to be less dangerous than smoking, people need to be aware of the risks it could pose. Young men using vapes are likely to be unaware of the link with ED.”

  1. Excessive alcohol consumption

“Heavy and prolonged alcohol use can damage the nerves and blood vessels that are essential for healthy erectile function. This is due to alcohol interfering with messengers in the brain that stimulate blood flow. Alcohol can also affect testosterone levels resulting in a decreased libido which could be a contributing factor if you are experiencing ED.”

  1. Stress and mental health

“Chronic stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions can make it harder to get and keep an erection. When we’re stressed or anxious, our body releases hormones that can affect the blood vessels and nerves responsible for erections.

“Stress and anxiety can also make us lose interest in sex or have trouble focusing. Plus, these sorts of feelings can make us turn to unhealthy habits like smoking or drinking too much, which can make ED worse. It’s important to find healthy ways to manage stress and anxiety, like doing relaxing activities or talking to someone you trust, and seeking appropriate mental health support.”

“Many young men may find it embarrassing or uncomfortable to discuss mental health issues, therefore if ED is being caused by stress, anxiety or depression, they may be unknowingly avoiding the root cause of the problem.”

  1. Relationship issues

“Difficulties in relationships can sometimes lead to erectile dysfunction. When people have problems in their relationship, such as feeling stressed, unhappy, or disconnected from your partner, it can make it harder to feel sexually excited. It’s important to talk about and work on these issues together to improve your relationship.”

  1. Medication

“Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and medications prescribed for high blood pressure and some prostate conditions, may have side effects that can contribute to ED. They may affect your hormones, blood circulation or nervous system, for instance, or reduce your libido. If you suspect a medication is affecting your sexual function, consult with your GP.”

Can Erectile Dysfunction be treated?

“As erectile dysfunction has many possible underlying causes, there are multiple different ways to treat it. It’s important to establish what is causing the issue with your doctor so the correct course of treatment can be advised.

“A lot of men presume there is something wrong and seek treatment, but for the most part ED is temporary and can be treated naturally by reassessing your lifestyle choices.

“However, if there is a physical problem, erectile dysfunction treatmentoptions are available. Prescription oral medications such as Viagra and sildenafil work by increasing blood flow to the penis. Physical treatments such as vacuum pumps or constriction rings are placed on the penis to encourage and maintain an erection.

“It’s important to highlight that whilst it may feel embarrassing, ED is extremely common and if you are concerned, talk through your options with a medical professional.”
