As Malmö gears up for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest this weekend, research from Heart Bingo has unveiled a fascinating revelation – since the competition’s inception in 1956 no other country has awarded more points to the United Kingdom than Ireland, while only Sweden have received more points from the Brits than their neighbours across the Irish sea in the same timeframe.
In a comprehensive analysis of points awarded to different Eurovision contenders over the past 68 years, Ireland have bestowed a whopping 268 points to the United Kingdom – 50 points more than Switzerland in second place – constituting over a third (36.51%) of all points they have dished out since their first appearance in the competition in 1965.
In a similar vein, Ireland are also among the table toppers when analysing the number of points awarded by the United Kingdom. The Irish have received 253 points from Brits since 1965, just four behind leaders Sweden, who only leapfrogged Ireland last year after winning the competition and receiving 12 points from the UK. Ireland, conversely, failed to make it past the semi-finals.
The bond between the UK and Ireland stands out amidst the enthralling tapestry of Eurovision dynamics, with Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany, and Belgium following suit in points contributed to the UK’s total haul, albeit at a distance. The relationship between these neighbouring nations is one steeped in history, art, and, of course, music.
