The day I arrived in Croatia is still fresh in my memory. Upon our arrival in Zagreb, the faint thrill of anticipation marked the start of an unforgettable journey. We chose to visit during late September, a time when the weather is perfectly warm, yet the crowds are thinner, making for a calm and enjoyable atmosphere.
There are four things to do in Croatia when you visit the country.
Our adventure started in Dubrovnik, a town with ancient walls surrounding a maze of cobblestone streets overlooking the Adriatic’s crystal-clear waters. As I strolled beside the city walls, I couldn’t help but feel transported to another time by the red-tiled roofs and ancient buildings, each telling tales of the past.
Our next destination was Split, a vibrant city filled with activity. The Diocletian Palace, acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a grand reflection of the city’s extensive past. Surprises awaited in every corner of Split, from lively markets to tranquil alleyways where locals chatted enthusiastically while enjoying coffee.
Going to Plitvice Lakes National Park was necessary. The park’s enchanting cascading waterfalls and abundant green plants were truly magical. We dedicated an entire day to exploring the paths, with each stride unveiling a fresh and awe-inspiring sight. With its charming old town and bustling harbour, Rovinj provided a wonderful blend of history and charm, serving as a delightful destination on our trip.
2. Enjoy Coastal Charms and Islands
To truly experience Croatia, one must explore its breathtaking coastline and many islands. We embarked on a boat in Split, cruising through the azure waters to reach Hvar Island. The tranquil beaches and clear waters of the island were ideal for relaxation. The coastal beauty was enchanting, whether relaxing on the sandy beaches or adventuring along the rocky cliffs.
We also found the lively atmosphere of seaside cities such as Zadar and Pula. Every town had its allure, with Pula’s historic Roman amphitheatre standing out. Losing ourselves in the beauty and tranquillity of these coastal havens came effortlessly.
Our culinary experience in Croatia was a delight for the senses. Every dining experience was exciting, whether we enjoyed fresh seafood by the sea or indulged in traditional meals at small family-owned eateries. We enjoyed food such as black risotto with cuttlefish ink and the popular peka, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable meal.
One of my favourite memories was exploring nearby markets and purchasing fresh produce and local delicacies. The markets were a joy with their lively colours and enticing scents. We frequently made easy, tasty meals using the fresh ingredients while admiring the breathtaking Croatian scenery.
4. Enjoy Various Activities for Tourists
Croatia offers something for every type of traveller, whether seeking thrilling adventures or peaceful relaxation. We dedicated our time to exploring a wide range of activities each day. The beaches provided clear waters ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and sailing. We discovered historic towns such as Dubrovnik and Split, where their deep past and lively culture fascinated us throughout our journey.
Walking through Plitvice Lakes National Park was a memorable adventure for those who love nature. The park’s unmatched natural splendour could be seen on every trail, each one revealing a different marvel. Thrill-seekers enjoyed the excitement of rock climbing in Paklenica National Park and zip-lining across the Cetina River, all while taking in breathtaking views.
An incredibly memorable experience was a boat party. We reserved our spots through Boat Party Tickets and had a fantastic night dancing on the waves, witnessing a stunning sunset over the Adriatic in a burst of colours. It was the ideal conclusion to a day of discovering new things.
Here are some practical tips to know:
Getting around Croatia was pretty straightforward. Croatian, the designated language, is commonly used, while English is used regularly in tourist locations. The currency in Croatia is the Croatian Kuna (HRK), but many places also accept Euros. Having a few Kuna on hand for small purchases is convenient, with a wide availability of ATMs and credit card options.
Public transport in Croatia is reliable and easy to use. Buses and trams effectively linked urban and rural areas. Travelling by ferry was a picturesque and convenient method for moving between islands along the coastline. Contemporary highways improved the ease and pleasure of road trips, while international airports in Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik provided easy accessibility.
It was easy to find accommodations. Croatia offers accommodations for all tastes, from high-end beach resorts to quaint boutique hotels and affordable choices. We had a great time staying in an ancient stone cabin in the centre of a seaside village, offering a mix of cosiness and authentic character. Eco-friendly lodges offer nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to enjoy Croatia’s natural beauty.
