Cheese can be enjoyed in various ways, from toasted cheese sandwiches to pizzas, to different kinds of pasta and sauces. However, the old wives’ tale says we shouldn’t indulge in cheese before bed, otherwise we’ll succumb to vivid nightmares.
In light of National Cheese Day on June 4th, 888 Casino tested our favourite cheeses to see which varieties are more likely to induce dreams, with each participant eating a different cheese before bed for 10 days and recording their REM (the stage of sleep where most dreams happen).
Ranked: The cheeses that may be causing your NIGHTMARES
| Rank | Cheese | Total time in REM sleep | Sleep quality score (out of 100) |
| 1 | Halloumi | 1hr 58m | 80 |
| 2 | Brie | 1hr 55m | 79 |
| Ricotta | 1hr 55m | 77 | |
| 3 | Cream Cheese | 1hr 53m | 80 |
| 4 | Parmesan | 1hr 44m | 80 |
| 5 | Camembert | 1hr 43m | 81 |
| 6 | Gorgonzola | 1hr 38m | 77 |
| 7 | Cheddar | 1hr 37m | 76 |
| Stilton | 1hr 37m | 78 | |
| 8 | Mozzarella | 1hr 33m | 72 |
Here are some key findings:
- Halloumi is the most likely to cause dreams, as participants experienced nearly two hours of REM sleep, the stage of slumber where dreaming is most likely to occur.
- Brie and Ricotta follow closely behind with REM sleep both at one hour and 55 minutes each.
- Meanwhile, Mozzarella and Cheddar have a slightly less dramatic effect on REM sleep, leading to an average of one hour and 33 and 37 minutes respectively.
