Does running for the bus give you the ick?

If being in a relationship wasn’t hard enough, there is a new thing for Brits to worry about as one in 10 (10%) admit it would give them the ‘ick’ if they saw their partner run for the bus and miss it, new research reveals.

New data from First Bus, one of the UK’s largest bus operators, reveals despite their best sprinting efforts, nearly one in 10 (9%) bus users admit they still always miss the bus – better hope their partner doesn’t see! Of all age groups asked, Millennials are the least forgiving with 6% confessing they would dump their partner if they saw them run for the bus and miss it – ouch.

The lengths Brits are going to

It seems Brits are willing to risk running for the bus, as people make the ‘bus dash’ on average 50 days per year, with Gen Z running nearly twice as often as the average at 96 days annually.

Over the course of the year, Brits who run for the bus are doing so for 39 minutes and 11 seconds, clocking up 2.8km purely running to make their bus, with each run covering approximately 56.2 metres.

And it seems when people have run for the bus and made it, and the doors are just about to close, they’re happy to tap on the glass so the bus driver can let them on – however the second-hand embarrassment is real for fellow commuters, as 32% of them say they cringe when they see someone do that.

Written in the stars?

It’s bad news for those who are Taurus (12%), Aries (11%) and Sagittarius (11%) as it’s revealed they are the three star signs that are most likely to miss their bus despite legging it down the road. Aquarius’ can breathe a little easier knowing they are the star sign least likely to miss the bus and give their partner the ‘ick’.

Star signs most likely to always miss the bus despite running

  • Taurus – 12%
  • Aries, Sagittarius – 11%
  • Leo – 10%
  • Capricorn, Pisces – 9%
  • Gemini – 8%
  • Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio – 7%
  • Aquarius – 6%

A spokesperson for First Bus commented: “When it comes to getting the bus, there is one thing most Brits have certainly done, which is run for one. We’ve all felt our cheeks turn red with embarrassment, trying to catch our breath as the bus pulls away without us on it.

“What we didn’t expect is how many people would consider ditching their partner after seeing them miss the bus – harsh! To avoid this being you, download the First Bus travel app, which includes live bus times, to help you plan your journey so you don’t have to wait around at the bus stop or sprint to make it there on time.”
