Expert shares 6 tips for protecting your flooring when hosting
Paul Brewster, LVT specialist and CEO at Flooring Hut, shares six tips to keep flooring clean when expecting guests:
1. Place doormats at entrances: “Set up doormats both outside and inside all entrances to your home. These mats help trap dirt, mud, and moisture, especially on rainy or muddy days. Encourage guests to wipe their shoes thoroughly or, even better, remove them entirely before coming in to prevent debris from being tracked onto your floors.”
2. Use area rugs or runners: “As well as using doormats, lay down area rugs or runners inside the home in areas like hallways or living spaces where lots of people will be walking. They help protect your floors from dirt, spills, and scuff marks.”
3. Clean floors before guests arrive: “Sweep or vacuum your floors before guests arrive to remove any dirt or debris. If you have time, mop or steam-clean hard floors, ensuring they’re dry before anyone arrives. Not only will this ensure your floor is clean and presentable for your guests, but it will also make the post-event cleanup much easier.
“A great tip for cleaning is to use baking soda and distilled vinegar, which costs only around £1. This is a really effective way to clean your flooring. If you have LVT flooring, try to avoid using abrasive substances like bleach as this can damage it.”
4. Have cleaning supplies at the ready: “Keep cleaning supplies like a broom, dustpan, or wet wipes readily available. This allows for quick cleanups if spills happen during your gathering, minimising any lasting damage to your floor.”
5. Protect high-spill zones: “For areas prone to spills, such as around food and drinks, use protective coverings like mats or place settings. This helps prevent accidental stains and makes it easier to maintain the cleanliness of your floor.”
6. Use temporary floor covering: “Consider using temporary floor coverings like carpet protectors or tarpaulin if you’re hosting. Furniture pads are also a great idea—place them under chair and table legs to prevent scratches and dents on your floor.”
Paul Brewster concludes: “To keep your floors looking their best before, after and during a gathering, it’s essential to stay on top of regular cleaning. Simple routines like sweeping, vacuuming, and occasional mopping will help maintain their shine before and after guests arrive, while being on hand for quick spot-cleaning from spills during your event can prevent long-term damage or staining.”
