Doctor Reveals Hot Showers Are Bad for You and Here’s Why!

Winter is the time for cosy nights in but according to experts, your favorite winter indulgence might be doing more harm than good. Cult Beauty spoke with Dr Deborah Lee, from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy to dive into the science behind why hot showers aren’t as soothing for your skin as they feel, and what you should be doing instead.

It’s no secret that hot showers feel amazing especially when it’s freezing outside. But Dr. Deborah Lee warns that high temperatures in the shower could be stripping your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even worsening skin conditions like eczema.

“The ideal shower temperature for your skin is lukewarm or cooler,” explains Dr. Lee. “Hot water strips away the skin’s protective barrier, which can result in excessive dryness, sensitivity, and even premature aging. It may feel comforting at the moment, but in the long run, your skin will thank you for turning the temperature down.”

Why your winter showers may be working against you

For many, showering is not just about hygiene, it’s a ritual. Whether you’re a morning person who needs an energising cleanse or a night owl winding down after a long day, your shower routine plays a key role in your overall well-being. But before you crank up the heat, consider these effects:

  • Dry, itchy skin – Hot water removes essential moisture, making skin prone to flaking and irritation.
  • Disrupted skin barrier – This can lead to increased sensitivity, redness, and breakouts.
  • Faster moisture loss – Especially during winter, when the cold air already saps hydration from your skin.

The best alternative to a hot shower

So, if hot showers are a no-go, what’s the best alternative? Senior Education & Experience Manager at L’Occitane, Millie Lloyd, shares her top tips for keeping skin happy while still enjoying your daily cleanse:

  • Keep it lukewarm – Stick to a temperature between 37°C and 38°C for the perfect balance of comfort and skin protection.
  • Limit shower time – A quick 5-10 minute shower is enough to cleanse without over-drying.
  • Moisturize immediately – Apply body lotion or oil while skin is still damp to lock in hydration.
  • Try a quick cool rinse – Ending with a burst of cool water helps to tighten pores and boost circulation.
