Kansas City Chiefs will become the first NFL team ever to win an historic ‘three-peat’, according to research comparing historic Super Bowl success with the political parties representing the teams involved.
The research, conducted by Daily Fantasy Sports platform SportsMillions.com, uncovered unique predictions for this year’s final, with the Chiefs aligning most closely to the average winner due to having a female governor.
With Leanne Kelly (D) representing Kansas and Gavin Newsom (D) for Pennsylvania, this is the 23rd Super Bowl where two Democrat run areas have faced off against each other. The average historical score for a Dem v Dem Super Bowl is 29 – 17.
Super Bowls have included a city or area governed by a woman on ten occasions, with 70% of these being victories and a cumulative score of 381 – 121, which bodes well for Leanne Kelly’s Chiefs.
Overall, Democrats run areas have experienced more success at the Super Bowl than Republicans, winning 34 times (59%) since 1967 and with a cumulative score of 1582 – 1125, but this is mostly due to appearing more often (86% of Super Bowl finals have involved a Democrat team).
Despite this, Republicans tend to make a better account for themselves when they do reach the Super Bowl, with a higher win percentage (56%). By comparison, Democrats win less than half the time they appear in the Super Bowl (47%).
Similarly, Republican run cities or areas score more points in the finals – the average score for a Republican governed team is 26 points, versus 22 for Democrats.
A team is more likely to win the Super Bowl if the current President is the same political party as that which governs their area. Democrats have won on 56% of the occasions that a Democrat is in the White House, compared to a 61% win rate for Republicans when there is a Republican President.
The last time a Republican governed team won the Super Bowl during a Republican presidency was the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, when Donald Trump was in power, and Charlie Baker represented California.
The opposite is true of location. You’re more likely to win the Super Bowl if it is hosted in a city with a government represented by the opposite party. Republicans have won on 67% of the times they have played Super Bowl finals in Democrat run cities, with Democrats winning 56% of the times they’ve played in Republican stadiums.
The first ever Democrat v Democrat Super Bowl was in 1971, with the then Baltimore Colts winning 16 to 13 against the Dallas Cowboys. The most recent example of this was last year, when Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious against San Francisco 49ers.
The rarest match-up is Republicans facing off against Republicans, which has only happened eight times, the first time being the Green Bay Packers win over Oakland Raiders in 1968, when Ronald Reagan was Governor of California. The last time an all-Republican Super Bowl took place back in 2010 when New Orleans Saints won against Indianapolis Colts.
Republican versus Democrat teams is most common (27 occurrences), and Republicans are more likely to win these match-ups – winning 59% of time. The average score in this game is 30 to 15.
