A recent study by Value My Car identified UK cities with the best drive-throughs by analyzing key factors that influence convenience and quality. The Drive-Through Quality Index (DTQI) was based on three metrics: drive-through density, which measures the number of drive-throughs per 100K residents; Google review ratings, reflecting customer satisfaction; and total number of drive-throughs, indicating variety and availability. Each metric was normalized for unbiased comparison, and the final DTQI score ranked cities in descending order to determine the best drive-through experience.

Ipswich tops the ranking as the UK city with the best drive-throughs, with a composite score of 81.58. It dominates the drive-through landscape with 180 establishments, the highest drive-through density at 118.76 per 100K residents. While Ipswich excels in quantity, its average review score of 3.77 suggests room for quality improvement compared to other top cities.
Derby comes in 2nd with a score of 79.76, offering 120 drive-throughs and a strong balance between quantity and quality. With a density of 44 and an impressive average review score of 4.06, Derby provides better customer satisfaction than Ipswich while maintaining good accessibility. This quality-focused approach places Derby just behind Ipswich despite having 60 fewer drive-throughs.
Luton follows in 3rd with a score of 75.74, featuring 100 drive-through options for its residents. Luton’s average review score of 3.97 shows consistently higher service quality than Derby’s. The small difference in scores between Derby and Luton highlights how competitive the drive-through market has become in mid-sized cities.
Leicester ranks 4th with a composite score of 73.55, achieving the highest customer satisfaction rating of all cities at 4.09. Despite having only 100 drive-throughs serving its larger population (creating a lower concentration at 24.6), Leicester’s exceptional quality ratings demonstrate that superior service can offset more limited availability.
Newcastle upon Tyne ranks 5th with a composite score of 70.63, featuring 100 drive-throughs and a strong average review score of 4. With a density at 34.91, Newcastle provides better drive-through accessibility than Leicester while maintaining strong customer satisfaction ratings that exceed Ipswich’s despite having 80 fewer establishments.
Huddersfield ranks sixth with a score of 67.82, offering 60 drive-throughs to its residents. This creates a high density at 42.35, approaching the levels seen in Derby and Luton. Huddersfield’s customer satisfaction score of 3.97 matches Luton’s, showing that smaller cities can deliver quality service comparable to larger competitors.
Wolverhampton comes in seventh with a score of 65, providing 80 drive-through options and a concentration of 34. With a customer satisfaction rating of 3.98, Wolverhampton’s drive-throughs receive reviews nearly as positive as those in Luton, despite having fewer total locations.
Manchester takes the 8th position with a score of 62.20, featuring 140 drive-throughs – the second-highest total after Ipswich. However, Manchester’s large population results in a lower drive-through density of 29.76, while its average review score of 3.78 falls below most other top cities. This illustrates that more drive-throughs don’t necessarily lead to better overall service.
Peterborough ranks 9th with a score of 59.39, with 60 drive-throughs serving its residents. Its density of 31.48 combines with a respectable average review score of 3.87, exceeding Manchester’s quality metrics despite having less than half as many total drive-throughs.
Sunderland rounds out the top ten with a score of 56.58, offering 60 drive-through options and a concentration of 35.65. This accessibility actually surpasses Manchester’s, though Sunderland’s average review score of 3.80 positions it at the lower end of customer satisfaction among the top ten cities.
A spokesperson from Value My Car commented on the study: “ In many areas, drive-throughs are no longer just about speed—they’re increasingly about delivering quality service that keeps customers coming back. This shift is especially noticeable in smaller cities, where operators have the advantage of fewer crowds and can focus more on enhancing the customer experience. As drive-throughs continue to thrive, it’s clear that a blend of accessibility and exceptional service is what truly defines success in this sector. The future of drive-throughs will likely be shaped by cities that prioritize these elements, offering not just a quick stop, but a high-quality experience.”
