A new global study from Remitly reveals the countries people dream of moving to the most, as well as the top reasons they would want to start a new life abroad

Achieving an overall better ‘quality of life’ ranks as the top reason for relocating, followed by enjoying a ‘better lifestyle’ and ‘career opportunities’ in third

Canada ranks as the country people want to move to most, with the biggest reason being a better quality of life, followed by Australia for the warm climate and Japan for the culture

The UK ranks as the fourth most popular country to move to and people are drawn to it because of its culture, job opportunity and ideal European location

A new global survey from Remitly, a service for sending money to and from the UK, has uncovered the top reasons people dream of moving abroad, and the countries they most want to call home.

From embracing new cultures to seeking better professional opportunities there are so many reasons why people want to start a new life in another country. To better understand what drives people to relocate internationally, Remitly surveyed more than 4,500 people across 26 countries, revealing the powerful factors that have them dreaming of a new life abroad, as well as the top countries they would love to start anew in.

Quality of life is the number one reason for people to move

Globally, achieving a better quality of life ranks as the top reason why people would want to move abroad, whether that’s having better access to healthcare and education, or having peace of mind that comes with living in a safer and cleaner city. For many, the promise of a brighter future for themselves or their families is the biggest motivation to move to a new country.

A better overall lifestyle ranks as the second most prominent reason, with people wanting to enjoy more of the day-to-day benefits of living in that country. Whether it’s savouring the slow-paced sunny mornings before work in a new location or making the most of the opportunities the country has to offer – the allure of a more fulfilling daily routine is a powerful driver for relocating.

Career and job prospects rank third, with many hoping to unlock professional growth overseas, followed by financial reasons such as cheaper rent or mortgages in fourth place. Adventure and personal growth round off the top five, with people from all around the world dreaming of embracing new cultures and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

People dream of moving to Canada the most

When it comes to dream destinations, Canada tops the list. For many people, Canada offers the perfect blend of opportunity and security, as well as the chance to immerse themselves in welcoming communities, making it easy for them to picture a future there.

Australia claims second place, with the country’s warm sunny climate attracting people the most, followed by the allure of a more relaxed lifestyle, with people envisioning themselves enjoying a better worklife balance. The exciting job opportunities are also a factor that would entice people to move to Australia, whether it’s embarking on a new career or bringing one of the in-demand skills the country’s seeking. Japan ranks in third, with its rich traditions, vibrant culture and delicious food offerings being the top factors respondents mentioned in our survey.

The UK and US also make the top five, ranking in fourth and fifth respectively, attracting people with their culture and career prospects.

More than just a new address – quote from Joe Halpin, UK CEO, Remitly

“The UK is once again crowned a global dream destination for many wanting to move abroad, consistent with numerous studies. Our study found people want to move to the UK specifically for three reasons: a diverse culture, excellent job opportunities, and the location, especially the ease of access to other European countries. Brits often take for granted how easy it is to hop on a train to Paris, or a short flight to Greece, something many others around the world could only dream of.

The UK is a top destination for those looking for professional growth and making the most of life outside of your 9-5. This balance is made possible with world-class employment hubs like London and Manchester, alongside some of the world’s best cultural sights across Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland too.”
