Energy Efficiency Expert: Ultimate 10‑Minute Pre‑Winter Checklist Revealed!

As temperatures drop and boilers spark back into life, a leading energy efficiency expert has revealed the ultimate 10‑minute pre‑winter checklist that everyone should be carrying out.

Jamie Burns, from reliability firm Ailsa, has lifted the lid on 10 things we should be doing as it gets colder and colder.

“Most of us think we’re being smart with our heating, but a few small bad habits can quietly waste hundreds of pounds each year,” said Jamie.

The Ultimate 10‑Minute Pre‑Winter Checklist

  • Run the heating for 20 minutes to test every radiator.
  • Bleed any that are cold at the top or noisy.
  • Check and set boiler pressure when the system is cold.
  • Move furniture at least a hand’s width away from radiators.
  • Set a realistic boiler flow temperature and leave it steady.
  • Programme timed schedules that match your routine.
  • Shut internal doors at night and use draught excluders.
  • Insulate hot‑water cylinders and any bare pipes you can reach.
  • Fit or adjust TRVs so little‑used rooms are set lower.
  • Book a service if it is overdue or you spot faults.

Jamie concluded: “Treat your home like a small building you manage. A tiny bit of set‑up work now delivers a warmer, quieter system and a calmer energy bill all winter.”
