Ben Gallizzi, energy expert at Uswitch, comments: “Despite the rising energy prices, 34 million households (62%) will put up Christmas lights this year. One in ten (10%) are already reducing how many lights they use due to high energy bills[1].”
“Switching to LED lights is a simple way to keep festive while cutting costs. LED lights typically use 80% less energy than halogen lights and last much longer. For example, powering a string of 100 LED fairy lights will cost 2p for eight hours of use, totalling at around £3.04 over the festive season”
“Over one million households told us they’ll be decorating their homes with snow machines, inflatables and high-wattage signs. The 800,000 households planning to illuminate their gardens with high-wattage outdoor signs could be adding £8.12 to energy bills if used for eight hours a day for 38 days. That’s a collective £6,496,000 spent on powering festive outdoor signage this Christmas.”
“To save money and prevent energy wastage, use timers to turn your decorations on and off each. If your decorations don’t have a timer, remember to switch your lights off at the plug. Solar-powered decorations are another great option to reduce energy costs and to help achieve a more sustainable Christmas”
