If your Wi-Fi feels painfully slow this December, it might not be your provider… it could be your Christmas decorations.
According to Uswitch broadband experts, everything from fairy lights interfering with Wi-Fi signal to giant inflatable Santas blocking your router could be to blame – meaning your festive setup might be the real Grinch stealing your broadband speed.
To keep your Wi-Fi merry and bright this festive season, Max Beckett, Uswitch broadband expert, has shared his essential Christmas connectivity tips:
- “Keep fairy lights off the naughty list: Believe it or not, your twinkling fairy lights can be Wi-Fi troublemakers. As magical as they look, they can interfere with your signal. Fairy lights can emit a weak electromagnetic field, which may disrupt the radio waves from your router. By all means, use as many as you want, but keep them a safe distance away from your router so your connection stays as bright as your decorations.
- “Don’t let your tree steal the show (or your signal): Your Christmas tree might be the star of the living room, but if it’s sitting right in front of your router, it could be stealing the spotlight, and your Wi-Fi signal. Keep big festive items like trees, giant stockings, or inflatable Santas at a distance from your router to avoid blockers.
- “Too much tinsel?: Decorations like tinsel add sparkle to your tree, but they could also be playing tricks on your broadband. Just like mirrors can bounce Wi-Fi signals around your home, that shiny strand of tinsel might do the same, depending on where it’s placed. To keep your connection strong, think about where your sparkliest decorations sit in relation to your router.
A good test to determine whether the placement of your router is adequate is to see whether you have a line of sight with it. If you can see it, great – if not, it’s probably too hidden away.
- “Avoid gadget overload under the tree: All those smart speakers, TVs, and gaming consoles fighting for bandwidth can slow things down, and with more family at home and new gadgets under the tree, your Wi-Fi can get especially busy this time of year. Disconnect or turn off any devices that aren’t in use to reduce the strain on your connection.
- “Stream smart this Christmas: If your festive films or TV shows keep buffering, your broadband might be struggling to keep up with your high-resolution settings. Switching to a lower resolution can make streaming smoother and keep the magic going without interruptions.
- “Extend your festive signal: If your Wi-Fi struggles to reach every corner of the house, a Wi-Fi extender could be the perfect festive fix. Larger homes, thick walls, and loft conversions often leave certain rooms with a weak or patchy signal. Plug an extender halfway between your router and the hard-to-reach spot, and it’ll boost the connection so your home stays connected this Christmas”.
