The weather has turned bitterly this week, with snow and ice warnings across the UK, meaning we’re all reaching for our cosy turtlenecks, scarves and big winter coats. But one big problem that comes with wearing our cosy knits is makeup transferring onto the fabrics.
To help, Cult Beauty‘s in-house make-up artist Kimi Nguyen has shared her top tips to keep your makeup in place and your winter layers clean, as well as a simple hack if makeup does get on your knits and coats:
1. Set your make-up
A strong setting spray is essential, Kimi recommends blotting your face with a tissue afterwards to make sure every layer of makeup is sealed before putting on your knits, coats and scarves.
2. The tissue barrier hack
When pulling on a jumper, turtleneck or winter coat, drape a few tissues over your face so the neckline glides over the tissue instead of dragging across your makeup. This prevents pigment transfer and stops smudging.
It’s also a make-up trick artists rely on during winter photo shoots.
3. Be strategic when applying
On days when you’re wearing a light-coloured knit, you absolutely don’t want to stain it, Kimi suggests skipping the product around the chin and jawline entirely. You still get a flawless finish without the risk of ruining your cream knits.
If your makeup has already transferred, Kimi shares her quick fix removal hack:
The ‘life and blot’ trick – dab the stain with a clean microfibre cloth dipped in micellar water, lifting the pigment from the fabric. Follow this with a dry cloth to blot away excess. This works especially well on coat collars and knitwear because it removes makeup without leaving water ring, stains or damaging the fibres from the clothing
