From 12 May 2026, only learner drivers are legally allowed to book and manage their own car driving tests, with the number of permitted changes already cut from six to two and further restrictions on test centre moves coming into force in June. Driving experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts say the changes mark a significant reset for a system that has struggled with long backlogs and misuse in recent years, shifting responsibility back to learners while reinforcing the role of professional instruction.
