Selling Sunset Got You Lusting For A Chicer Pad?

It’s here! Season 6 of Selling Sunset, the TV show that is filled with glamour, luxe living and statement style has finally dropped on Netflix – and that’s just the Oppenheim Group cast! The hit show, famous for its luxurious properties boasting high-end features, roomy bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes and breathtaking views, has interior lovers swooning at the opulence.

Although owning a mansion overlooking the Hollywood Hills might be a pipe dream for most, that doesn’t stop us from wanting to bring some chic LA style into our UK homes. On behalf of ConservatoryLand,  Interior Stylist & TV Presenter Maxine Brady shares her decor tips and tricks below. Follow her advice, and you’ll have a luxe home in no time!

1. Decorating In Luxe Neutrals

We see plenty of neutral furnishings scattered throughout the homes featured on Selling Sunset. Why? Well natural colours complement a wide range of architectural styles and design preferences and appeal to LA’s billionaire property hunters.

Maxine explains, “The element that links all the multi-million pound pads in on the Selling Sunset TV show is their soft, neutral colour palette. These natural tones appeal to everyone, and when done well, give a home a luxurious look. It doesn’t matter if your home is modern or traditional, neutral hues are the best backdrop for great interior design.”

Maxine’s Top Tips: Start by choosing a colour palette of four natural tones, and use these shades throughout the interior of your home from walls to accessories for a cohesive look. Zhoosh Paints has lots of complementary neutral shades for you to choose from such as ‘Soulful Beige’ or ‘Pop Grey’. Complement these tones with furniture with swooping curves, marble and gold finishes and textured fabrics for that true LA style.”

2. Landscaping Is Key

All the properties on Selling Sunset have paid great attention to their exterior spaces. Manicured lawns, infinity pools and garden rooms all feature heavily on the show, as well as epic outdoor fire pits, like those pictured in Chrishell Stause’s newest $3.3m Hollywood home. Time to turn your attention to your outdoor space to recreate that LA look.

Maxine says, “Although we may not get year-round warm weather in the UK, our gardens still have a huge part to play in how we enjoy our homes. Take inspiration from Cailfornian mansions by updating your garden area with exotic plants, water features or seating areas so that you can enjoy your outdoor space throughout the summer months.”

Maxine’s Top Tips: Solar lighting has a transformative effect on a garden. Try stringing up festoon lights, fix wall lanterns to highlight interesting planting or lower level spot lights to illuminate your pathways. If you are lucky enough to have a conservatory (or the room for one) think about modernising this space with new glazing, contemporary furniture, rugs and plants so that you can get that inside-out feeling even when the weather is cooler.

3. Make Your Kitchen A Focal Point

Remember when Estate Agent Heather El Moussa is showing a home and instructs the hired stager to allow the kitchen area to do the talking? That’s because for a glossy LA-inspired interior you’ll want your kitchen to take centre stage in your home.

Maxine says, “Entertaining is huge in LA, and that explains why the kitchen takes centre stage in these million dollar homes. Serving as multi-functional spaces, kitchens are social spaces to cook and host – Christine even has four ovens in her own LA pad!

Maxine’s Top Tips: “One way to bring this element to the UK is by incorporating a central island into your kitchen design that can accommodate several people with counter stools. If you’re thinking of upgrading your kitchen, then invest in the latest appliances from wine fridges with WIFI, to steam ovens, pop up extractors and instant boiling taps just as you would find in the Hollywood Hills.”

4. Create Impact With Statement Lighting

As they say on Selling Sunset… ‘Sexy lighting is always a showstopper!’ So no surprises that we can spot lots of bold lighting throughout the homes featured in the show, such as Christine’s neon ‘Netflix and Chill’ sign.

Maxine agrees that such pieces are key for getting a luxury look for less, “When decorating a room, lighting can be overlooked which is missing a trick. In my interiors, I like to add drama with all types of lighting. Think crystal chandeliers, contemporary pendants and eclectic lamps with interesting shaped shades that will instantly make your home look more impressive.

Maxine’s Top Tips: “First you’ll want to install a statement light up above that will look just as good turned off as when switched on. The bigger the better IMHO! And in open plan spaces, make sure your pendant lights match for a sleek finish. Then you’ll want to add picture lights, wall lights, standard lights and table lights to light up your room during different times of the day. What lighting you choose will set the tone for your interior style so make sure you choose wisely. I‘m a huge fan of 1970s style lights that will give your home vintage glamour.”
