The temperature in the UK has significantly dropped. With constant weather warnings like storm Ciaran and reports of cold snaps, it’s clear that preparation for colder weather is underway.
But when exactly should we think about dusting off last season’s winter coat or investing in a new one?
David Johnson, Technical and Category Manager at The Underfloor Heating Store, has analysed data on the average daily temperature over the last five years in the UK to find out the exact date UK temperatures dropped below 10C for a minimum of 30 days, revealing 16th November 2023 as the starting point of colder UK temperatures.
“UK weather, as we all know, can be unpredictable,” says David Johnson. “We need only remember the heatwave we experienced in September to see that the usual seasonal transitions are much more sporadic.
We hope that by sharing this data, we can help people be better prepared for the upcoming temperature dips, particularly those who commute or leave the house in the early hours when the temperature is at its lowest for the day.
Before the cold weather truly sets in, on 16th November, this upcoming week is a good time to inspect and maintain your winter coats. Look out for any signs of wear and tear that might limit their effectiveness, like fraying seams, rips or compromised insulation and visit your local clothing repair business to bring your coat back to life. Likewise, if you’re looking to invest in a new coat, this week is definitely the time to do so.
Despite the data, David urges people to remember that the timing for investing in a winter coat is dependent on your location. “Colder regions like Scotland and Northern England, as well as coastal towns and cities, will likely require winter coats earlier, so stay tuned to your local weather reports to be best prepared.”
