With the classic UK high street having seen the impacts of closures over the last few years, the availability of our favourite brands in the places we choose to live is more important than ever.
With this in mind, GetAgent, the UK’s estate agent comparison site, has commissioned a survey to reveal exactly which high street brands we care about the most, and how much more we’d pay to live near to them.
The shop that most homeowners are interested in living near is none other than supermarket giant Tesco, with 14% of homeowners saying they’d pay more money to live near one of its branches.
The brands people want to live nearest to
Notably, the top three brands people are most keen to live near are all supermarkets, with second place and third place filled by Marks & Spencer and Aldi, respectively. Over 1 in 10 (12%) of homeowners would pay more to live near family favourite M&S, while 11% say the same for budget option Aldi.
Although low-cost chains like Aldi and Lidl have seen huge rises in popularity in recent years, Tesco is the clear front runner – not too surprising since the multinational retailer was voted Britain’s favourite supermarket for the ninth year in a row in 2023.

This isn’t just any house, this is an M&S house
Interestingly, despite more people saying they would pay more to live near to Tesco – it’s leading British retailer M&S that takes the top spot as the store that could earn you extra cash when selling your home, with half (49%) of people who’d pay more to live near to one saying they’d pay up to £5,000 extra.
Following closely behind, with 45% of respondents saying they’d pay up to £5,000 more to live nearby, is luxury supermarket chain Waitrose, furniture shop favourite IKEA and state-of-the-art gym chain David Lloyd.

Colby Short, co-founder and CEO of GetAgent comments: “With so many factors impacting the value of our homes, we wanted to discover if living near to certain iconic UK shops, cafes and gyms could increase the selling price of your house. Accessibility to the brands we know and love can really make or break how you feel about an area, so it was incredibly interesting to see this reflected in how much extra people would pay to live near certain shops!
“While living near certain chain supermarkets and retailers is clearly important to many people, and it’s great to know it can be a big selling point when it comes to putting your home on the market, we’d encourage people to support their local shops where possible to keep our UK high streets thriving.”
