Betway’s latest research has analysed the outfits of each Oscar winner from 1929 to 2024 across four categories (Best Actress, Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Supporting Actor), to determine which dress colours and suit combinations have proven the luckiest in history.

- When it comes to Oscars fashion, black reigns supreme as the go-to colour for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress winners, with almost a third opting for this classic shade.
- Despite this, black has only been worn once by Best Actress winners since 2003 (in 2021 by Frances McDormand for her role in Nomadland), and hasn’t been worn since 2008 by a Best Supporting Actress winner, suggesting lucky colours are now tipped in favour of bolder, brighter tones.
- White takes second place, worn by 12 previous Best Actress winners – most recently by Michelle Yeoh in 2023 when claiming her prize for Everything Everywhere All at Once. It’s also the most worn colour in the past 10 years, worn three times. White has also been worn 11 times in total by Best Supporting Actresses.
- Gold has been on the rise among Best Actress winners. This colour has been worn nine times in total by the winners of this category, however eight of those nine times have been within the last 50 years.
- Blue, however, seems to be a lucky charm for supporting actresses. It’s been the choice for 14% of winners in this category, compared to 10% of Best Actress winners. Most recently, Da’Vine Joy Randolph dazzled in blue as she took home the 2024 Best Supporting Actress award for The Holdovers.
When it comes to the men, one outfit combination seems to help them take home the gold:
- The classic black suit and white shirt combo dominates the Oscars red carpet for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor winners, with 90% sticking to this timeless look.
- Only a few winners have broken this trend, with Jack Palance being one of the first, opting for a grey suit when he won for City Slickersin 1992.
- When it comes to finishing touches, the classic bow tie reigns takes the crown, worn by over 80% of winners. However, one in ten have dared to be different, swapping the bow tie for a standard neck tie.
- Three winners for Best Supporting Actor in the past six years wore neither a bow tie or neck tie, most recently Robbie Downey-Junior in 2024 when taking home the gold for Oppenheimer, suggesting A-listers are becoming even more open to showing off their individual styles.
Betway have also released their odds on the favourites to win the coveted awards. For Best Actor and Best Actress these are:
- Adrien Brody is the favourite to win Best Actor for The Brutalist at 8/13 odds – 62% probability.
- Demi Moore is the favourite to win Best Actress for The Substanceat 4/7 odds – 64% probability.
