With freezing temperatures and damp weather settling in across the UK, drivers can turn to some surprisingly bizarre household hacks to keep their cars dry, odour-free and ice-free this winter, and experts say they actually work.
Three of the strangest fixes gaining traction right now, with hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok alone, involve teabags, cat litter and socks, which are items more at home in cupboards and wardrobes than parked cars.
- Teabags under the seats and on the dashboard are being used as a natural moisture and odour absorber, helping reduce the damp, musty smells that build up during short winter journeys. 4 – 6 plain black tea bags per car should be enough to make a difference!
- Cat litter sealed inside an old sock is being placed in footwells or on the dashboard to draw excess moisture from the air, cutting down on foggy windows and that lingering “wet dog” smell common in cold weather. Use a clumping clay cat litter in socks and refresh every couple of weeks for the best results!
- And socks pulled over wing mirrors and door handles overnight are being used to stop frost from forming, saving drivers time scraping ice in the morning and preventing frozen fingers.
Experts say these hacks work to combat winter moisture inside cars, especially during short trips where interiors never fully dry out, leading to condensation, smells and even early mould growth if ignored.
