The iPhone app store is an incredibly huge and sometimes daunting place. So much choice with very little by way of a search facility to find exactly what you want. Obviously Apple do their best to advertise the apps they want you to see, but what about those free apps that can sometimes slip under the radar? In this new series, I will look at reviewing the very best (and worst) of the free-to-buy iPhone apps on the market.
Welcome to my first free-app review! For the first review I’m going to cover one of my favourite free games to be released on the iPhone – Aqueduct 101. When downloading a free game from the app store, you know not to expect graphics like Call of Duty or gameplay like Grand Theft Auto. What you do expect is something cheap, and sometimes nasty! But Aqueduct 101 is as brilliant as it is simple. Released as a pre-curser to entice you to pay £1.79 for the full version, Kieffer Bros. have provided us with 48 unique levels of brain-teasing goodness.
The game is a basic connect-the-pipes, slide puzzle game. You start off with a tap, a drain, and a number of pipe bits to connect the two. Sounds simple yes? Well it is. But the addictiveness of the puzzles is what surprised me the most. The levels get progressively harder, as you would expect from any self respecting puzzle game, yet the progressiveness and difficulty of each level is one of its most endearing features.
If you like puzzle games you will like this one, and unlike a lot of other ‘lite’ versions of paid apps, this one will keep you busy for a fair bit of time. Does it make you want to pay for the full app? I don’t think so, as £1.79 seems a little pricey for what it is. Don’t let that put you off though, I give this one 4/5
