In the picture above, there’s seemingly no difference between the displays on the two phones. Ah, but I wouldn’t be writing this if that were the case!
On the left, we’re given a site in standard view, i.e., what we’d see if we looked at this site from our laptops. On the right, we’re given the mobile view, i.e., a version of the same site, but one that’s more practical to be seen on the go, when we’re viewing it from our smartphones.
As you can tell, smartphones have the capability to see both standard and mobile friendly views of all sites. As a matter of fact, some sites ask smartphone users which standard they’d prefer to view, but what I’m here to talk about is how important it is that the rest of the Internet gets on board with mobile friendly.
Mobile friendly makes things simpler. And for an age where we want both information and the ability to get it quickly, I must say that mobile friendly is what we all need. It gets rid of the clutter we see on standard versions of sites, organizing tabs neatly and displaying them boldly, and plays to the advantage of a smartphone user by making it easier to navigate.
I know I’m not the only one that gets aggravated when trying to access a site on my smartphone and instead, am adjusting the full sized site to fit my palm sized screen and still cannot fit the text into an alignment that prevents me from having to adjust the screen repeatedly– all because this said site doesn’t have a mobile version. It’s annoying and for me, shows that the said site is behind the times.
It’s something I think most smaller brands, startups, random sites, and whatever else I’m forgetting to mention are totally behind the ball on, considering that smartphones have taken over across the world in nearly all demographics, and the people behind these sites have more than likely seen and utilized mobile friendly ones before.
It’s hard enough to keep our attention these days, so what I’m really trying push here is this: as a consumer, and speaking on behalf of many other consumers, don’t you think it’s really important by now, given the little time you have, whether you’re a brand, social media platform or advertiser to make my time on your site as efficient as possible? Without mobile friendly versions of all sites, those still lacking them will have a harder and harder time thriving in the future.
