Pop culture is always taking unexpected turns and twists. One prime example is the sudden popularity of hipsterdom. With the new emphasis people are putting on being uncool and different, it is inevitable that the originators of that ‘uncool’ lifestyle are going to butt heads with the people profiting and becoming popular off of that perception. One prime example of this clash is the clash between geeks and hipsters.
Hipsterdom, relying on pretentious deadpan and exclusivity, revolves around being “ironic” and becoming unique via the appropriation of other cultures and other subcultures. That is where hipsters tend to draw ire; their self importance based on how rare or outside of the norm their interests and clothing are.
Geekiness, on the other hand, is mostly based around a passion for things that popular culture deems “uncool”. Geeks don’t have the interests they have because they’re rare, they are interested in geeky things because those are the things they like.
