Tissues at the ready please. This video is perfection- the perfect complement to a beautiful song. The song was written by Prince for his side project “The Family” and released by Sinead O’Connor in 1990.
This video was mainly shot in Paris and wasn’t originally intended to just be long periods of a close up of Sinead’s face. When Director John Maybury watched it back, he realised how much emotion she had put into her performance and decided to go mainly with that. This is a good thing when you just happen to be heart-stoppingly beautiful and only 24 years old. Sinead has the most astonishing all-seeing icy blue eyes, and they are so expressive it is almost painful to watch.
It was said about this video that she sheds a tear when singing because of her relationship with her manager, which had not ended well. Sinead has stated this is not true, and that she cried when she sang “All the flowers that you planted Mother, in the back yard, all died when you went away” due to her complex relationship with her late Mother.
I can’t really find the words to say how much I love this song. Some love songs make you glow like you’ve just drunk a really big cup of hot chocolate in front of the fire with fluffy socks on. This one will leave you feeling hollow like you’ve just been punched in the stomach. I really love the horrible sarcasm at the beginning of the song. It is so sad to think that of someone who has tried everything to feel happy, and realised that there is just no point, because nothing compares.
