If you search for this question online ‘how long should my mattress last’, you will find lots of answers to the question posed above. People will respond with all kinds of estimates: 5-7 years, 7-10 years, 10-20 years, etc. But with all these different answers, how do we know who is right? Well, the truth is that they are all right. That is because there is no one correct answer. The number of years one mattress should last depends on a number of variables, including the brand of mattress, the quality of the mattress, how you treat it, how much you (or you and your partner) weigh, and all other kinds of things. But if you want to get the most out of your investment, here are some tips to make sure that the mattress you buy or currently have lasts as long as possible while providing you with comfort every night.
How Long Should My Mattress Last?
1. Flip the Mattress Periodically
This may seem like an interesting way to prolong a mattress’s life, but it is pretty important that you do this. Like all kinds of furniture, mattresses will tend to wear out unevenly. So, in order to make sure that the mattress shares the burden of being a mattress with the whole top, be sure to rotate it. This should be done 1 or 2 times a year, depending on your preference.
2. Do your best to keep food and drink away
This one is basically a no-brainer. We all know what kinds of issues can be caused by drinks being spilled or food crumbs being left over and these issues can compound because of constant exposure or repeated mistakes such as spilling soda on the sheets or leaving crumbs from that pizza you had in bed while the wife wasn’t home. If you want to prolong the life of your mattress, you will keep food and drink where it belongs: basically anywhere but on the mattress.
3. Try to maintain a healthy weight
This is a good tip for life as well as for maintaining a comfortable and long-lasting mattress. When exposed to higher amounts of weight, mattresses tend to sag more and take more of a beating over time. Hence, they tend not to last as long. But, if the combined weight on the mattress is lower and in a more healthy range, the life of the mattress increases substantially.
4. Don’t buy a “cheap” mattress
A mattress is one of the more important investments an adult can make. Not necessarily in monetary value, but in what a good mattress does for you as opposed to what a cheap mattress doesn’t provide. When buying a mattress, it is important to be willing to spend a bit more to make sure that you are getting a restful night’s sleep that will help to propel you through the day. After all, you spend approximately a third of your day lying down on it; you might as well invest and get one that will last, be comfortable, and provide you with all the benefits of a good night’s sleep.
