Much of our behavior is based on societal norms and expectations that surround us from the time we’re born. These expectations help us perceive and navigate the world. But what happens when your social world has slightly different norms than the larger society? Oftentimes these differences cause misunderstandings and conflict both internally and externally.
Rather than question yourself and feel pressured to be something you’re not, learn to embrace and love your unique style and perspective. This doesn’t have to require bold, in-your-face action, but rather you can incorporate small, subtle statements into your life to show who you truly are.
Make a Fashion Statement
You don’t have to wear the latest trends to make a positive fashion statement. Some of the most famous fashion icons became popular because they took risks with their style and chose items that made them feel good.
Mainstream culture doesn’t always embrace the wild and different, but subcultures, like skate culture and punk culture, are all about being who you are and not conforming to the mainstream. Whether you’re flashy or more subdued, brands that cater to skate and punk culture offer a wide variety of styles that allow you to choose your perfect path and style.
Take Action
Activism is a great way to take a stand for the things you believe in, and it enables you to support the community and culture you identify with. Many activist groups function on local and national levels, and they are always working for their cause.
Anyone can donate to charity, but if you’re truly passionate and invested in the cause you’re supporting, it sets you apart from the crowd and provides you with a community of people with similar interests. There’s a cause out there for everyone, from equal rights to public policy, so choose wisely and make your mark.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
To figure out who you are as an individual, you have to stop comparing yourself to everyone else — even others in your social circle. Social influence is powerful, and it’s easy to find yourself being led by the pack, picking up the habits, styles and opinions of those around you. While you don’t have to be in direct opposition to the crowd, it’s important to identify your unique characteristics, opinions and ideas to maintain your true identity.
Build a Community
An essential part of pursuing nonconformity is building or participating in a community. Much of the focus is less on the outside world and how you’re perceived, and more about supporting others and seeking self-progression. If you live in a small town where you feel isolated, turn to online communities. You may even discover other people in your area you can connect with on a more personal level.
Psychologists classify humans as herd animals. Research has shown that social disapproval stimulates the parts of the brain that alert us to danger. So, in some cases, it’s perfectly acceptable (and natural) to go along with expectations and normative behaviors. Not all situations or instincts are right, so your best bet is to assess these urges to follow before making the leap.
