Must See – 1-Day Prague Itinerary

Over the last couple of years, Prague has become an increasingly popular destination for city breaks for people from all over the world.

Its fascinating history, spectacular architecture and vibrant food and nightlife scene make it one of Europe’s best cities to visit at any time of year.

However, as Prague is such a large city with a plethora of things to see and do, it can be hard to know how to spend just 1 day in the Czech capital city. If you’ve only got a short 24 hours to spend in the city, here’s a must-see itinerary for visiting Prague in 1 day.

Admire Prague Castle

Prague

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, occupying almost 70,000 square metres of land in the capital city. It provides visitors with stunning views over the city as well as many historic artefacts and spectacular pieces of architecture to enjoy.

It’s a must-see while spending 1 day in Prague as it’s the city’s most popular tourist destination, attracting over 1.8 million people every year. In order to get to Prague Castle, you can wander through the streets of Mala Strana which will provide you with beautiful views of the castle complex from below.

While venturing through Mala Strana, you should also pay a quick visit to one of the many coffee shops to indulge in a decadent hot chocolate before you ascend to the top of the castle.

Eat a Trdelník

Trdelnik

While the Trdelník isn’t technically a regional food of Prague (it originated in Slovakia), it’s still one of the most popular sweet treats to indulge in when visiting the city.

Made from rolled dough that’s wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with a sugar-and-walnut mix, a Trdelník is a must-eat when in Prague.

You’ll find them situated at food stalls on almost every street and each vendor will have their own unique twist on this delicious delicacy. Whether you eat yours just as it comes or top it with chocolate or ice cream, you must try a Trdelník during your day in Prague.

Walk Over Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge is another fascinating thing to see on your 1-day Prague itinerary. It dates all the way back to the 15th century and spans across the city’s river, Vltava.

The 10-meter-wide and 621-meter-long bridge is also home to more than 30 statues depicting famous historic saints and patrons, dating all the way back to the 1680s. Even if you’re not fascinated by the abundance of rich history that Charles Bridge exudes, it’s still worth visiting during your time in Prague.

Charles Bridge allows for idyllic photo opportunities of the Vltava River, as well as a sneak peek all the way up to Prague Castle. The bridge is also situated in the middle of the city, providing you with easy access to Mala Strana on one side and the Old Town on the other side of the river.

Explore the Old Town Square

Prague’s Old Town Square is world-famous for its picturesque setting, spectacular surrounding churches and buildings, and thriving atmosphere.

It’s also home to the Old Town Hall which houses the mesmerising Astronomical Clock, and the Hall includes an observatory tower where you can climb up to get a glimpse of some of the best views in the city.

The Old Town Square also comprises various churches including the Church of Our Lady before Týn and St. Nicholas’ Church. Regardless of whether you’re religious or not, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bad word to say about the Old Town Square and its plethora of spectacular buildings.

Pay Your Respects at the John Lennon Wall

At the John Lennon Wall, Prague

The John Lennon Wall is located not too far from the streets of Mala Strana, so it’s an ideal place to visit after you’ve spent a few hours wandering around the Prague Castle complex.

While the wall has been around for many years, since the 1980s it’s been home to a tribute graffiti wall with fans paying their respects to the late Beatles singer.

The wall is covered in a smattering of beautiful artistry, lyrics from popular songs by The Beatles, as well as kind messages and respects from fans of John Lennon from all over the world. Although the meaning behind the wall is quite sombre and a place of respect and even grief, the wall is so brightly coloured that it looks truly beautiful and is an accurate depiction of the late singer’s eclectic life.

Conclusion

As you can see, Prague is home to so many wonderful sights and attractions it can be hard to find just a few to visit. Hopefully this guide will have shown you the top 5 things to do in 1 day in the city!
