Have you ever wondered how a dolphin sleeps in the water? Or how long a bird sleeps whilst migrating?

Experts constantly debate about the recommended amount of sleep that human beings need in order to survive. Having the right amount of sleep in necessary for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Silentnight wanted to find out, how does the animal kingdom look after their circadian rhythms? and can we use this insight to help us take better care of our own. Which animal do you take inspiration from?

Sloths – The Deep Sleeper 10-15 hours a day

So many social media memes referring to the sleepy sloth, which so many of us can relate to (we’d all love to sleep for 10 hours a day curled up right?)

Albatross – The Dynamic Snorer 42 minutes a day

Mid-flight sleepers, one of the largest species of bird catching on average 42 minutes a day. Scientists were even able to observe characteristics of REM sleep, such as relaxed muscle tones, also common in humans.

Chimpanzees – The Bed Builder 9 hours a day

Bed sleepers just like ourselves, and one of mans closes relatives. Known to build their own beds from a mixture of branches, and other debris picked up from the jungle chimpanzees do not skimp on comfort, and ensure they have a comfortable nap for 9 hours high up in the trees to protect themselves from predators.

Sea Otters – The Communal Sleeper 11 hours a day

Cute alert, Sea Otters are the literally relationship goals for everyone, sleeping hand in hand to ensure neither of them float away at see these amphibious mammals will actually sleep in pairs or larger groups holding hands (which forms an anchor)
