With the cost of living ever increasing, especially the cost of gas and electricity, some are worried about the cost of how much Christmas dinner will cost to cook. We’ve all read how ingredients for the traditional roast turkey dinner for a family of 4 is now pushing £30, but how much would that cost to cook?
Bimson Power took a look at how much energy cooking a traditional Christmas dinner would use up, and also created a more ‘energy efficient’ version – bringing in one of the must have items of 2022 – an air fryer – into the mix. We found out that by taking a more ‘thrifty’ route in terms of how to cook – and what to cook – you could save £4.39 if on the average electricity rate.
Cooking the dinner the traditional way
- If all dishes were cooked separately 18.67 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £6.36
- If dishes that could be cooked together were cooked together 12.97 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £4.40
Cooking a thriftier way – having turkey
- If all dishes were cooked separately 10.92 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £3.72
- If all dishes were cooked separately bar Yorkshire puddings were cooked using heat from turkey 10.79 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £3.67
Cooking a thriftier way – having chicken instead of turkey
- If all dishes were cooked separately 5.92 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £2.01
- If all dishes were cooked separately bar Yorkshire puddings were cooked using heat from chicken 5.79 kWh
- Average electricity cost to cook: £1.97
All calculations included pre-heating the oven, bringing water to boil on the hob and preheating an air fryer (where needed). Average electricity unit rate of 34.04p per kWh.
