From temperature regulation to the perfect pyjamas, M&S’ latest study shows what the UK is wearing to bed and explains how choosing the right nightwear can help you to make the most of your sleep.
The study* found that 44% of men and women across the UK wear some form of pyjamas to sleep, being a much more popular choice than everyday loungewear (13%). But just how can your sleep attire of choice impact your sleep? Below, M&S shares what you need to know about nightwear to ensure you get the best sleep possible.
How to get a good night’s sleep
A spokesperson at M&S offers insight to answer some of the most frequently asked questions on Google, about sleeping temperature and nightwear.
- What is the perfect temperature for sleep?
“It is often said that a temperature near 18.3°C is ideal. Your body’s temperature decreases during sleep, and a cool (but not cold) room can help you settle into and maintain sleep throughout the night. Being in a comfortable environment is essential for healthy sleep. If the temperature in the room is too hot or cold, it may cause you to have disrupted sleep.
- Does my core temperature change throughout my sleep cycle?
“Your internal temperature shifts during a 24-hour period. When we rest and go to sleep the body cools down, which is why you might feel colder when waking up. Our designers and technologists are aware of the differences in body temperatures in men and women, however, sleeping temperatures are all very much down to individual preferences.”
- How to stay comfortable all night long?
“Wearing the right nightwear is key to creating the ultimate in comfort whilst you sleep, combined with the temperature of the room you sleep in. Having different pyjama options is the best way to make sure you can tailor your temperature to the time of the year. With a range of sleeve and leg pyjama lengths, alongside cool and comfortable fabrications and mix and match options, there really is something for everyone.”
- What kind of fabrics should I look out for?
“Cotton is the most popular fabric for pyjamas and is a popular choice with our customers. It’s lightweight, breathable and cool to wear. The natural cotton fabric of pyjamas is comfortable, it also absorbs sweat from the skin and evaporates it from the surface quickly, helping to regulate body temperature. Cotton can also keep you warm during the colder months because of its ability to retain your heat. We only ever use responsibly sourced cotton across out collections too.”
“If you tend to feel warmer in bed, pyjamas with cellulosic fibres are naturally cooling, look for anything that contains Modal or Tencel (made from wood pulp). Nightwear pieces made with Supima cotton and Modal are beautifully soft and feel luxurious too.
If you like to feel toasty in bed, opt for M&S brushed cotton pyjamas – these tend to hold more of the warmth generated by your body because of the loftiness of the fibres.”
