Sajjad Haider, founder at Putt Pursuit shared that “golf requires a lot of land to build a course, which means disturbing natural habitats. Then comes the maintenance. Golf courses guzzle water and pesticides like there’s no tomorrow. Add the use of fuel-powered carts, and that’s a recipe for environmental disaster. The gear game isn’t innocent, either. Manufacturing of golf clubs, balls, and other equipment involves a lot of resources, some of which are toxic materials. Fortunately, with the growing concern for environmental sustainability, there have been numerous developments, innovations, and initiatives aimed at making golf more eco-friendly”.

Some of these include:

  • Organic Courses: Most courses use natural grass and organic fertilisers, reducing the use of harmful chemicals
  • Water Conservation: Some courses have implemented water conservation techniques such as using recycled water for irrigation or installing artificial turf in non-playing areas
  • Renewable Energy: There’s a switch towards solar power for operations, minimising the reliance on fossil fuels
  • Biodegradable Equipment: Some companies are making bamboo golf tees. They are green tees that are tougher, longer-lasting, and completely biodegradable. Sustainable golfing gloves, terry golf polos, and towels are also becoming more popular

When it comes to water conservation on golf courses, Sajjad added that “rainwater harvesting, using recycled water for irrigation, and employing smart irrigation systems help reduce the amount of freshwater used. It preserves valuable water resources and decreases the run-off of fertilisers and pesticides into nearby water bodies. Furthermore, installing artificial turf in non-playing areas and drought-resistant turf in playing areas can drastically cut down on water consumption”.

Talking on recycling programs for golf equipment and accessories, Sajjadadded that “damaged golf equipment, like golf tees, bags, clubs, and balls, usually end up in landfills. Recycling programs – like those offered by some major golf brands – collect and repurpose these items into new products. It reduces waste in landfills and decreases the need for producing new equipment using additional resources. It decreases the environmental impact of golfing on the planet. Some companies also offer trade-in programs where customers can exchange their used equipment for a discount on new purchases. This not only encourages recycling but also reduces the demand for new products, thereby conserving resources and reducing pollution from manufacturing”.

FUTURE DEVLOPMENTS, INNOVATIONS, AND INITIATIVES

Sajjad also shared that we can expect to see further developments in the area. These might include:

  • Smart Water Management: Installation of sensors to detect soil moisture and smart irrigation systems to monitor and regulate water usage according to weather conditions
  • Electric Golf Carts: The transition from fuel-powered carts to electric ones is already underway, reducing carbon emissions and noise pollution on the course
  • Sustainable Clubhouses: Building eco-friendly clubhouses with energy-efficient designs, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting systems

As well as moving to EVs (electric vehicles), utilising solar energy is also currently being considered to power golf carts. Sajjad added that “solar panel golf carts absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. No emissions and no noise pollutions. It’s clean! Plus, solar panel golf carts save money on fuel costs and reduce the carbon footprint of golf courses. It’s a step towards greener operations”.

SUSTAINBLE MATERIALS – BAMBOO & CABRETTA LEATHER

Sajjad commented on how bamboo is being increasingly utilised in golf: “wooden and plastic have been the popular choice for golf tees for a long time. Plastic golf tees are cost-effective and durable. However, they use harmful materials like resin during manufacturing, making them non-biodegradable. This contributes to plastic pollution in landfills and oceans. Wooden tees, on the other hand, are biodegradable but still require trees to be cut down for production. Bamboo golf tees, made from bamboo grass, offer a sustainable alternative.
