How to have sex in a heatwave

When it’s sweltering outside, getting it on can seem impossible, not to mention wholely unappealing. Skin-on-skin contact, intensive exercise, and getting covered in sweat? Not exactly an ideal activity when you’re trying to stay cool.

But if there’s something about the warmer weather that gets you hot and bothered in other ways, there’s still plenty of ways for you to get it on. Annabelle Knight, sex and relationships expert at Lovehoney gives her tips for getting sensual in summer, and how you can turn up the temperature while still staying cool.

It’s all about positioning

Of course one of the best ways you can still have sex while making sure things don’t get TOO hot is by choosing positions that minimise skin-to-skin contact. Probably the best option here is doggy – we can’t think of a position with less contact involved! An adjusted spooning position can also work wonders here, with a similar amount of skin contact with just a little less of the airflow.

You also can’t go wrong with reverse cowgirl as this minimises torso contact to help keep things slightly cooler while also keeping things spicy – although it may not be as cooling for the person putting the work in.

Penetration isn’t everything

It’s also important to remember that you can still have extremely sensual experiences without penetrative sex. Oral sex can be an amazing way to both give and receive pleasure while having barely any skin-on-skin contact (other than the obvious), along with requiring much less physical effort than going all the way. Just keep in mind that if it’s especially warm or you’ve been out all day, maybe be courteous to your partner and hop in the shower first…

Want to avoid physical contact altogether? Give mutual masturbation a try. This can be very erotic for you and your partner and can help create some amazing intimacy, all while keeping the heat to a minimum. If you haven’t tried this before, a heatwave is the perfect excuse to explore.

Keeping it cool

If you and your partner are just feeling too hot to heat things up even further, why not try incorporating cooling down into your play? Temperature play can bring some new sensations, using ice cubes to stimulate the senses while also helping cope with the temperature. Try running the ice cubes over the skin and gently blowing on it for a truly sensual experience, especially over areas that are already particularly sensitive such as nipples and the neck.

If you haven’t tried shower sex before, then this could be the time to do it. You may normally think of a cold shower being used to turn you off instead of turn you on, but when you’re both in need of one and also in need of some intimacy this idea can be flipped on its head. Once you’ve found the right angles for standing sex and have the water set to just the right temperature, you’ll be able to get down and dirty while staying squeaky clean.
