The award for the most confusing Halloween movie of all time goes to Donnie Darko (2001), with 204,000 average yearly searches. With a star-studded cast including Drew Barrymore, Seth Rogen and Jake Gyllenhaal, the movie was a success, scoring a 8 out of 10 IMDb rating. The ambiguous nature of time loops and free will in the film leaves audiences debating what actually happened, turning to Google to help them understand.

Generating 120,000 average yearly searches, The Shining (1980) ranks second on the list. Although it received a high IMDb rating of 8.4 out of 10, viewers were left questioning the ending, which blurs the line between reality and the supernatural.

Get Out (2017) secures the third spot with 67,200 average yearly searches. This psychological horror currently holds a 7.8 out of 10 IMDb ranking. While it certainly left viewers feeling uneasy and terrified, its ending also left them with questions, as the film challenges viewers’ expectations with its unsettling blend of horror and social commentary.

In fourth place is Hereditary (2018), which accumulated 55,080 average yearly searches. Following the story of the Graham family who just suffered the loss of a closed relative, the movie brought chills down viewers’ spines. But the sharp turn towards the supernatural in the final scene left people with more questions than answers.

And rounding off the top five, with 19,200 average yearly searches is the Barbarian (2022). A relatively recent movie, this horror explores the story of a young girl who comes to realise the home she had rented is already occupied, but still she chooses to spend the night. As the story spirals into chaos, the abrupt changes in tone and perspective leave viewers unsure of who or what the true threat is.
