Could your vape be making you sick? Experts reveal why you need to be cleaning your vape this cold and flu season

With a cold and flu season in full swing, experts have revealed one important thing that may be putting e-cigarette users at risk.

According to experts at Vape Superstore, there are 1,430 searches every month around advice on cleaning your vape. Compared to the 5.6 million vapers in the UK, the numbers show a lack of awareness when it comes to the importance of vape cleaning and the hygiene routines users should follow.

Improper upkeep and cleaning is particularly problematic during the winter months when our immune systems are weakened and at risk of picking up viruses, infections and respiratory illnesses. If left uncleaned a dirty vape can become a breeding ground for bacteria, mould and more.

In light of this, David Phillips at Vape Superstore shares the simplest way to keep your vape clean and reduce the chances of getting sick.

  1. Clean the drip tip

The drip tip is the mouthpiece element of your vape which is designed to collect condensation during use. As a result this means that it’s one of the first places to be susceptible to a build up of residue. Once a week it’s important to give this piece a wipe with some clean tissue or a cotton bud.

For a deeper clean detach the drip tip and run under warm water to loosen any debris. A mild soap can help with cleaning, just make sure to avoid any harsh cleaning chemicals which might damage the element.

  1. Keep the tank clean

The vape tank can also harbour harmful bacteria and as the part of the vape which holds the liquid to be inhaled, it’s one of the most essential places to clean. To give it a clean, disassemble the tank before wiping off any liquid excess with a clean tissue.

Place the chimney, glass and base in a bowl of warm water with washing up liquid before scrubbing clean with an unused toothbrush – this will help you get into those hard to reach areas where bacteria can thrive. Remove from the water and pat dry before letting air dry fully overnight.

  1. Keep your hands clean

One of the most overlooked parts of keeping your vaping routine hygienic is to try and ensure you clean your hands regularly before handling your vape. Dirt and residue from your hands can build up on and around the mouthpiece and tank which not only means you’ll need to clean it more often but can also lead to increased exposure to infections or illness.

  1. Never share your vape

Don’t be tempted to share your vape or take a puff of someone else’s to protect yourself from passing on germs or viral infections. Droplets of saliva from another person can be inhaled which can increase the risk of transmitting respiratory infections like Covid-19, cold, flu and even pneumonia.
