The ultimate winter gutter checklist: Expert reveals how to prevent damp and roof damage

With the clocks going back and the autumn showers in full swing, now is the time for homeowners to turn their attention to their gutters. Your gutters are easy to forget about, but they actually play a crucial role in directing rainwater away from your home. When they become blocked, water can overflow and seep into walls, causing damp and long-term roof damage.

Mike Storey, roofing and insulation expert at UKFR Roofing & Insulation, explains:

“Gutters work quietly in the background to protect your home, but they need regular care, especially at this time of year. A few simple checks can make all the difference in preventing leaks and moisture build-up.”

So, what should homeowners be doing now? Mike shares his six-step winter gutter checklist:

Clear out leaves and debris:

“Autumn leaves are the biggest culprits for blockages, and it’s important that you clear your gutters and drainpipes regularly to make sure rainwater can flow freely,” says Mike. “For most homes, this can be done by using a sturdy ladder, a small trowel, and some gloves. Remove large debris by hand and then flush the gutters with a hosepipe to check water flow.”

Check for sagging or cracks:

Heavy rain and frost can cause gutters to bend or split. “Look along the full length of your gutters for signs of sagging, cracks, or leaks. Catching these early helps prevent more serious damage later down the line.”

Inspect joints and brackets:

“Make sure all joints are secure and that brackets are firmly attached to the fascia (the long, horizontal board that runs along the lower edge of your roof). Loose fittings can pull away under the weight of water or ice,” Mike advises.

Watch for hidden signs of water damage:

Damp patches, peeling paint, or green staining on walls are warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored. “These often mean water is overflowing or leaking behind the gutter,” says Mike.

Check drainpipes and drainage:

“Don’t forget the drainpipes. It’s crucial that you make sure water flows freely all the way to the ground. All you need to do is blast your hosepipe through your gutters to identify any blockages you might not be able to see.”

Know when to call a professional:

“If your gutters are difficult to access, or you notice more serious issues like leaks behind the fascia or signs of rot, it’s best to bring in an expert,” Mike explains.

Mike concludes:

“Your gutters aren’t needed as much in summer, but now the rain and falling leaves have returned in autumn ahead of the inevitable freezing conditions in winter, they become a key part of your home’s defence against the elements once again. Regular checks, especially before and after heavy weather, are the simplest way to keep everything running smoothly and protect your home throughout the autumn and winter seasons.”
