Christmas market season has started! But for EV owners, the festive fun isn’t just about mince pies and twinkling lights; keeping your battery fully charged and finding convenient parking can make the difference between a festive stroll through the stalls and a frozen hunt for a parking spot.
To ensure a merry market visit, a new study by temporary car insurance experts Tempcover reveals which UK Christmas markets are leading the charge when it comes to EV infrastructure. By mapping EV charging stations, the study reveals the markets where drivers can spend less time hunting for chargers and more time enjoying the festive cheer.
The UK’s Top Christmas Markets for EV Drivers
1. Leicester Christmas Market – 34 EV Charging Locations
Returning to Gallowtree Gate from 13 November to 28 December, the Leicester Christmas Market is not only a festive highlight but also the UK’s most EV-friendly[1]. With 34 public charging locations within a five mile radius, it’s the perfect choice for EV owners looking to keep the festive fun fully charged.
2. Manchester Christmas Market – 21 EV Charging Locations
Manchester Christmas Market ranks second, with 21 public EV charging spots within a five mile radius of the festive hub. Running from 7 November to 22nd December, the market attracts around nine million visitors annually.[2,3] With such high footfall, the city’s higher investment in EV infrastructure ensures that more visitors can explore the 240+ stalls without worrying about keeping their vehicles charged.
2. Cardiff Christmas Market – 21 EV Charging Locations
Cardiff Christmas Market shares second place for EV accessibility, with 21 public charging stations within a five mile radius of the market. Taking place between 13 November to 23 December 2025, the market transforms the city centre into a festive wonderland with dozens of stalls and seasonal attractions[4].

As the festive season approaches, many Brits will be relying on their cars for trips to Christmas markets and family gatherings. However, winter driving and longer journeys can present unique challenges for EV owners.
To make journeys smoother this festive season, Claire Wills-McKissick, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, shares her top tips for EV drivers:
- Plan Your Charging Stops: With some markets offering limited charging infrastructure, it’s crucial to plan your route. Check ahead of time for reliable charging points along your journey, especially in rural or remote areas.
- Winter-Proof Your EV: Cold temperatures can reduce an EV’s range, so it’s important to make sure your battery is sufficiently charged before setting off. Most EVs allow you to schedule pre-conditioning, which warms up your vehicle while it’s stationary, giving you a cosy start to your journey and helping maintain battery performance[5]. If you have a garage, it’s worth using it, as this will reduce your EV’s exposure to cold temperatures.
- Check Tyre Pressure and Fluids: Cold weather can cause tyre pressure to drop, which may affect handling and safety for all vehicles – not just EVs. Regularly check tyre pressure, especially before long trips. Additionally, make sure your windscreen washer fluid is topped up with winter-grade fluid, as freezing conditions can cause it to solidify quickly.
- Be Mindful of Reduced Daylight: Shorter days and limited visibility during the festive season mean it’s essential to ensure your headlights, taillights, and wipers are in optimal condition. For all drivers, adjust your driving habits to account for lower light levels and glare, and make sure to carry extra supplies such as blankets and snacks in case of delays.
- Consider Temporary Car Insurance for Seasonal Trips: Temporary insurance provides short-term coverage, ideal for longer festive journeys to Christmas markets, allowing you to share the driving with ease. It also makes borrowing a larger car as a group simpler, so you can enjoy the trip without the stress of finding multiple parking spaces, especially in crowded areas.
