For students across the UK, a city’s nightlife can make or break university life. From buzzing bars to legendary clubs, a great night out shapes the experience just as much as lectures do. With summer fast approaching, longer evenings on the way, and those 9 pm sunsets just around the corner, now’s the time to start planning those all-important nights out. So, which city takes the crown for the best student nightlife?
To find out, accommodation provider Canvas analysed key nightlife factors such as drink prices, the number and ratings of venues, and local safety scores to reveal the best cities in the UK for a night out.

Key findings:
- Bath ranks as the UK’s top city for student nightlife, thanks to its high concentration of bars and clubs, 10 per 10,000 people, and an impressive average rating of 4.45 stars. While the total number of venues (98) may seem modest, the per capita access is among the best. Despite having the most expensive average pint at £5.75, Bath’s strong safety score and lively atmosphere make it a clear winner.
- Coming in second, Manchester is home to the highest number of bars and clubs overall, with 606 venues, 15 for every 10,000 people. With strong average ratings of 4.37 stars, and a pint costing slightly less than Bath at £5.50.
- Newcastle secures third place with 273 bars and clubs (an impressive 14 venues per 10,000 people) with an average rating of 4.37 stars and a lower-than-average pint price of £5.00.
Findings from the wider study:
- When it comes to budget-friendly student nights out, Coventry and Leicester stand out with the cheapest pints among the UK’s top nightlife cities, both averaging just £4.00 per beer. They also rank as the most affordable for soft drinks like Pepsi and Coke, making it easy for students to enjoy a night out on any budget.
- On the other hand, London and Oxford have some of the priciest pints for student nightlife, with averages of £8.00 and £6.20 per beer, respectively.
- When it comes to safety, Coventry, Bath, and Exeter top the charts for student nightlife. Coventry leads with a safety score of 70.04, followed closely by Bath at 66.12 and Exeter at 62.33.
