Brits are falling back in love with the traditional white wedding dress, with new polling showing support for the classic bridal look is now at its highest level in six years.
A YouGov study analysed by Deacons found that 45% of adults think the tradition of brides wearing white should be preserved, compared with 33% who believe it should be dropped.
The figures suggest the white wedding dress is not only holding its ground, but enjoying renewed popularity as the UK wedding season gets under way.
White wedding dresses are back in the spotlight, with celebrity weddings such as Jack Whitehall and Roxy Horner’s helping to keep the classic bridal look firmly on trend. Horner’s wedding wardrobe, including a strapless silk gown and statement jewellery, offered a high-profile example of how brides are giving white a modern fashion update.
How to style a white or off-white wedding dress with jewellery
Lee Heaven, bridal jewellery expert at Deacons, explains, “While the traditional white wedding dress remains a firm favourite, modern brides are looking for a fresh update with softer shades, elegant cuts and accessories that add a more personal touch. Pearls remain a timeless choice for brides wanting a romantic finish, while silver jewellery works beautifully with brighter white gowns. For those choosing ivory or off-white dresses, vintage-inspired or heirloom pieces can bring warmth, character and a sense of individuality to the final look.”
Match the dress shade
“Bright white gowns usually work best with cooler-toned metals such as silver, platinum and white gold, while ivory and off-white dresses tend to suit warmer tones like yellow gold, rose gold and softer pearl finishes.”
Let the neckline lead
“Strapless, sweetheart and lower necklines leave room for a delicate necklace or pearl strand, while high-neck and halter dresses are often better styled with statement earrings and no necklace at all.”
Keep the look balanced
“If the dress already has lace, sparkle, beading or heavy embellishment, lighter jewellery will usually create a more polished finish. Simpler gowns can carry a bolder necklace, drop earrings or a more noticeable bracelet.”
Use pearls and heirlooms well
“Pearls remain a timeless bridal choice because they work across almost every shade of white and add softness without overpowering the dress. Vintage-inspired and heirloom pieces can also bring sentiment, character and a more personal feel to the final look.”
Choose pieces you will wear again
“Many brides now want jewellery that feels special on the day but can still be worn long after the wedding. Classic diamonds, simple pearl pieces and refined gold or silver designs are often the easiest options for lasting wear.”
Lee concludes, “The white wedding dress may be a tradition, but its appeal is about far more than symbolism. For many brides, it still represents joy, romance and the start of something new, which is why it continues to hold such a special place in some of life’s most meaningful moments.”
