With summer fast approaching, planning an affordable getaway is becoming increasingly challenging, especially with some flights now costing up to 76% more than last year. As a result, more people are turning to hidden gem destinations across Europe that offer better value and convenience without compromising on experience.
So, which ‘hidden gem’ destinations offer the best value for summer 2026?
To find out, credit card expert Zable analysed key metrics such as flight costs, taxi fares, and tourist volumes to reveal the best hidden gem destinations worth visiting this summer.
Kotor, Montenegro takes the top spot as Europe’s best hidden gem destination to visit this summer. Nestled along the stunning Adriatic coast, this UNESCO-listed town is known for its dramatic mountain backdrop, medieval old town and beautiful bay, often described as one of Europe’s most scenic destinations. Beyond its historic streets and waterfront views, Kotor offers plenty to explore, with 199 four-star-plus attractions to discover. With return flights averaging just £79, the city combines natural beauty, culture and affordability, although a five-night stay costs around £846 with a tourist tax of £4.35.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria ranks second, offering travellers a charming mix of ancient history, culture and excellent value for money. One of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Plovdiv is famous for its Roman ruins, colourful Old Town, creative arts scene and the iconic Kapana creative district, filled with independent cafés, galleries and restaurants. With 156 four-star-plus attractions, average return flights of £121 and five-night accommodation costing just £386, Plovdiv is a standout choice for those looking for an affordable city break packed with character.
Tallinn, Estonia completes the top three, combining fairytale-like architecture with a thriving modern culture. The Estonian capital is best known for its beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, cobbled streets and historic city walls, alongside a growing reputation for technology, design and food. With an impressive 622 four-star-plus attractions, Tallinn offers more highly rated experiences than any other destination in the ranking. Return flights average £93, five-night accommodation costs around £797, and visitors can enjoy their stay without paying any tourist tax.
