Top five most shocking celeb hairstyles of 2012

Celebrities never disappoint when it comes to making bold statements with their styles on and off the red carpet. Their hairstyles are no exception to the rule. Whether it be a new cut, perm, or colour, celebrities’ trips to the salon are known to produce startling results. After all, who can forget Britney Spears’ shaved head mental meltdown or Rihanna’s clown-red locks? There’s always a new batch of dramatic ‘dos on display; let’s take a look at the top five most shocking celeb hairstyles this season.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry is famous for short, stylish, sexy crops. But this spring, she has been sporting a curly two-tone mane. The actress has been seen with the new ‘do—which features shoulder-length golden brown extensions—out on the red carpet at recent parties in New York City and at home back in Los Angeles. The spiral-curled hair-do may signal new beginnings for the actress, who confirmed her engagement to Olivier Martinez earlier in the year.

Anne Hathaway

Since her breakout role in The Princess Diaries, we’ve known Anne Hathaway for her long-layered brunette tresses. But the actress has been sporting a super short pixie cut since the beginning of April. Following the cue of other famous brunettes who’ve lopped off their long manes for starring roles — Demi Moore in G.I. Jane and Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, to name a few —Hathaway has reportedly chopped off her locks in preparation of her upcoming role in Les Mis. In the movie, she’ll play Fantine, a single mother who must sell her hair and turn to prostitution to support her child.

Princess Charlene Wittstock

Another lady has traded in her long locks for a pixie cut is Princess Charlene Wittstock of Monaco. Formerly known for keeping her shoulder-length golden tresses slicked back in a low ponytail, the royal premiered her new short, side-parted crop at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament in late April.

Emma Stone

Though she’s a natural blonde, we’ve come to love Emma Stone for her signature red tresses as seen in Superbad and Easy A. But the actress was seen at the 2012 Kids Choice Awards this spring donning a much paler (and probably more natural) hue. Get used to seeing the lighter locks, at least on screen: Stone will appear as a blonde in this summer’s blockbuster release of The Amazing Spider-Man.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry is no stranger to colour—since she arrived on the pop music scene, we’ve seen her try everything from platinum blonde to jet black to bubble gum pink. Recently, the singer traded in her electric blue locks to try a deep violet hue, which her colourist is calling “purple velvet.” Perry debuted her new shade at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California in April. We can only wonder what’s next for the pop star—lime green? creamsicle orange?
