As winter begins to sweep across the globe, it is time that we start focusing on what needs to be done before the snow begins to fall regularly. Too many people wait until the last minute and wind up spending time in the cold completing tasks that could have been done beforehand. Procrastination can be your worst adversary as you put off tomorrow what you could have done today. What kinds of things do you need to secure before the snow falls?
1. Preparing the Vehicle – The last thing you want to do is fight your vehicle in the snow. One of the most miserable experiences in vehicle maintenance is changing a tire in 15 centimeters of snow. Give your auto a full examination to make sure all of your equipment is working such as the heater and the condition of your tires. Many people have a seasonal set of snow tires specifically for this purpose. Regular maintenance can help you keep the vehicle moving without problems.
2. Doors and Windows – Taking some time to give your home a thorough examination can help you prepare for the winter. By making sure all of your doors and windows are secure and the gaps between the frame work have been filled, you can keep more warm air inside and the cold out. Not only will this increase your comfort level during the winter, but it can help reduce your energy bills as well. Don’t forget to make sure pipes are secured and ready for freezing temperatures.
3. Hoses – Make sure your hoses are rolled up and put away for the winter. You want to make sure that all of the water that is in them has been drained. If you store them in the house, this will produce a watery mess as the hose drains onto your floor. If you store them outside, draining can eliminate the chances the hose could freeze and burst as the temperatures drop.
4. Filters – If you have a heating system that relies on moving air around the home, you need to make sure the filters are clean. A clogged filter can reduce airflow reducing your heater’s ability to keep you warm when the temperatures begin to drop. While the lack of airflow diminishes the heater’s capabilities, it will still use great amounts of gas in order to attempt to heat the home costing you a great deal of money. While some may have reusable filters, others may need to replace these units before the system is activated. They are usually inexpensive and can save you money throughout the winter.
5. Cleaning Your Lot – Keeping your lot cleaned before the snow falls can reduce the mess you will be faced with in the spring. Depending on the debris that may be scattered about, some of these can breakdown and create a far worse mess after the ice and snow have melted.
Getting as much done as you can now will save you a lot of grief later on. All too often do people assume that they have more time to get tasks completed before it snows only for nature to prove them wrong. Make sure you’re ready for the winter before it reminds you why you needed to get your tasks done in the first place.
