Pavement over pubs: Why run clubs are the UK's hottest new dating spot

Forget swiping right; the real spark might happen while you’re out running. As the Friday night pint loses its lead to the Saturday morning social, the UK is trading digital burnout for a different kind of heartbeat: the run club.

Pioneering British running brand Ronhill highlights a ‘Great Reset’ where singles are abandoning dating apps in favour of run clubs, driven by a desire for authentic, face-to-face connections, shared interests, and true connections built naturally through mutual interests.

The UK’s newest dating ground

Recent research reveals that nearly a quarter (22%) of Gen Z agree that run clubs are the new dating app, with 72% attending fitness groups specifically to meet new people. [1]

This shift toward “analogue dating” comes as a response to widespread digital fatigue. According to a recent survey, a staggering 78% of dating app users now report frequent burnout [2], leading singles to abandon digital platforms in favour of more natural connections.

Run clubs provide a high-energy alternative for a new generation of daters who are drinking less and sick of the “swipe-and-ghost” cycle.

The first date shift

Those who continue to use dating apps are also prioritising their health by swapping cocktail bars and hangovers for active dates. A recent fitness report found that nearly half (46%) of Gen Z runners now say “yes” to a workout first date, while 39% use fitness platforms specifically to find love. [3]

Evidence of this shift is visible on dating profiles across the country: mentions of “running” in UK Tinder bios doubled over the last two years, and “parkrun” mentions soared by 90%.

Authentic attraction

In 2025, the majority (73%) of young singles on Tinder stated they only know they like someone when they can “be themselves”. [4] This level of authenticity is easily found during a morning run or a post-run coffee, but rarely on a digital profile.

“For decades, Ronhill has been about the grit and consistency of the daily run. Today, that grit is becoming the foundation for new relationships, whether that be new friendships or more,”  says Jon Wild, Brand Manager for Ronhill. “In an era of digital fatigue, run clubs offer something dating apps can’t: shared hardship, shared values, and a completely unedited first impression.”

But what can run clubs, fitness classes, and park runs offer that dating apps can’t?

Less pressure, more natural interaction

On dating apps, we often judge people based on a selection of snapshots and a few lines of text. Meeting face-to-face allows conversations and friendships to form naturally, away from the ‘swipe-and-ghost’ cycle. Plus, a relaxed environment reduces pressure, allowing people to be themselves and feel more comfortable; something that can often lead to more authentic romantic connections. It’s also less intense than sitting across from someone in a dimly lit restaurant or chatting online.

Builds stronger foundations

One of the biggest challenges in online dating is figuring out whether you have anything meaningful in common. At a run club, you instantly know that you share an interest in fitness, wellbeing, and self‑improvement. This shared mindset is a powerful starting point for a much deeper connection; whether you bond over celebrating a new personal best or just chatting during a cool‑down stretch, you’re actively building something that’s rooted in shared experiences. This authentic bond is something that dating apps simply can’t replicate.

Relationships grow organically

You tend to see the same faces each week, support each other, and are building new, genuine connections over time. This slow-burn approach often leads to strong, longer-lasting romantic relationships. Plus, if romance doesn’t happen, you can still walk away with new friends, better health, and a supportive community around you.

The running-towards-love checklist

Catering to the rising number of singles trading swipes for strides, here is the ultimate checklist for building natural relationships with like-minded people at your next run club:

  • Check the pace: If you’re trying to chat, you should be running at a conversational pace, meaning you can speak in full sentences without gasping. Save the intervals for your solo sessions.
  • The 10-minute rule: Arriving 10 minutes early is the easiest, lowest-pressure window to strike up a conversation before the heart rate spikes.
  • Authenticity over aesthetics: In a world of filtered dating profiles, the run club is the last bastion of the unedited self.
  • Always have a layer ready: The transition from running mode to social mode happens the moment the watches stop. Being prepared for the post-run coffee is key to extending the date.
  • Forget the filters: Embrace the post-run-glow. According to Tinder data, authenticity is the biggest turn-on for young singles. A bit of sweat is just proof of a shared interest.
  • The Strava slide: If you hit it off, a simple “great run today” comment on their activity is the perfect, low-stakes way to stay in touch.
