Instagram just dropped a brand new feature called Instants, and it's already causing chaos. If you've opened your inbox in the last day or two and accidentally sent a photo to your entire friends list, you're not alone — and you're definitely not overreacting. What is Instants? Instants is Instagram's new format for sharing authentic, disappearing photos in real time — think a cross between Snapchat and BeReal. It lives in your inbox as a mini photo stack in the bottom-right corner, and when you open it for the first time, Instagram runs you through a brief intro explaining that Instants disappear, there's no viewers list, and that reactions and replies are private. ilmattinoilmattino Sounds fine so far. Here's the bit that's catching people out. Why is everyone accidentally sending photos? The moment you tap the shutter button in the Instants camera, the photo is automatically sent to everyone on your Friends list — unless you've manually switched the setting to "Close Friends" beforehand. There's no preview, no confirmation screen, no "are you sure?" moment. It just sends. ilmattino On an app like Instagram, where users are accustomed to carefully curating their content before sharing, the feature's instant-send design has understandably frustrated many people — particularly given that their privacy is at stake. ilmattino Instagram does include an Undo option once a photo has been sent, but it's easy to miss because the whole experience of accidentally sending a photo to others can be quite jarring. ilmattino How to turn off Instants completely If you'd rather just not deal with it, here's how to disable it: Go to your profile, tap the three-line menu at the top right to open settings, scroll down to "Content Preferences", and toggle on "Hide Instants in Inbox." Once selected, you'll no longer see the Instants feature in your inbox, and you won't receive any Instants that others send you either. ilmattino If you don't want to go that far, you can hold down the pile of Instants in your inbox and swipe right to temporarily pause receiving them. ilmattino How to undo an Instant you've already sent If you've already had the panic of watching a photo vanish into your friends list, act fast. As soon as an Instant is sent, an "Undo" option appears beneath the shutter button — tap it quickly to retract the photo before anyone sees it. Alternatively, you can go to your archive by tapping the four-box icon at the top right of the camera and delete the Instant to unsend it to friends who haven't opened it yet. ilmattino The bigger picture This is clearly Instagram taking another swing at the candid, unfiltered photo space — and the design logic of auto-sending makes sense if you want to replicate the spontaneity of BeReal. But rolling it out with Friends as the default, and without making the instant-send mechanic obvious to new users, was always going to cause problems. For now, if you're not ready to embrace the chaos of accidental photo blasts, the settings are there. Use them.
