How Do You Learn?

People are all different, and everyone retains information in different ways. When learning something, you may use a different method than your friend to remember something. This is perfectly normal- there are different kinds of learners.

There are 3 main kinds of learning styles, and these are kinaesthetic, auditory and visual. I fall under the category of visual or auditory. Some people are a mixture of two learning styles, and some lucky people learn in all 3 different styles! Either way, it is good to recognise your personal learning style and practise using this style of learning- this will help you to achieve your best potential.

Here is a brief overview of each kind of style, and different methods that these kind of learners use to learn. I hope it helps with your learning!

KINAESTHETIC LEARNERS

Kinaesthetic Learners prefer a more hands-on approach to learning- they learn best by actually performing a task. If you are a kinaesthetic learner you may constantly fidget, get easily distracted or don’t like sitting around for long periods of time.

If you are kinaesthetic learner, some good methods for you to use are:

  • Walk about while reading and reviewing notes
  • Use hand gestures to explain a concept to someone
  • Mould or draw what you are learning to help you remember
  • Work standing up, or while exercising
  • Carry a stress ball while working (don’t let it distract you from your topic though!)
  • If possible, perform the task you are learning about.

AUDITORY LEARNERS

Auditory Learners use hearing when they study. If you are an auditory learner you normally like to talk with other people, prefer listening to a lecture instead of reading lots of text and find things easier to understand if they are explained verbally.

If you are an auditory learner, useful methods for learning would be:

  • Explain ideas to others and let them explain ideas to you
  • Read information out loud
  • Record information and then play it back to yourself
  • Create rhymes or something musical to remember notes by
  • Listen to music while studying
  • Work with other people and discuss

VISUAL LEARNERS

Visual learners use sight to help them learn. If you are a visual learner you may think in pictures, remember where certain key words were on a page and enjoy taking notes.

If you are a visual learner, these methods may be helpful for you:

  • Create diagrams, pictures and charts to help you remember important points
  • Use highlighters and coloured pens to distinguish between points
  • Take and review notes
  • Work in a quiet place away from verbal distractions
  • Use computers and multi-media devices for studying
  • Write important points under significant headings.

Of course, these methods may not work for all learners, and you may even have a few other tricks you use to help you remember information. If you have any tips you’d like to share on studying or learning, comment below and share your wisdom with the world!

I hope this article helped- happy learning!
