A Spare Guest at Christmas

It’s almost that time year of year AGAIN. In just a few more weeks Slade will be telling everyone Iiiit’s Chriiiistmas, the shops are already getting decked out with boughs of holly and smiling faced Santa’s encouraging us to spend, spend, spend! It may be several weeks away, but as anyone knows these weeks leading up to Christmas fly by so fast anyone would think Father Christmas is made of magic!

If this year you are hosting Christmas for friends or family, the time to start preparing for the holiday season is NOW. There will be plenty of last minute chores and shopping to do, so get ahead of yourself and prepare your home for any houseguests as soon as you can.

If you don’t have a spare room, the chances are your kids will be bunking up together to make room for one or more houseguests. If you are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom, now is the time for that spring-clean you promised in March!

Any room that stays un-used most of the year will need a good airing and an even more thorough hoover and dust. Try to do this twice before guests arrive to make sure there aren’t lots of dust bunnies hiding under the bed, no mother-in-law worth her salt would approve of dust bunnies!

Once the room is well aired and dust free, think about a Christmassy smelling air freshener to add a touch of festive cheer to the room. There are plenty to choose from, cranberry, orange and cloves, Christmas pine, it’s the little touches that make a big difference!

Every guest needs a decent night’s sleep. If the spare bed is old and worn, even the deepest sleeper may wake up with an aching back or sore neck. Check the mattress is not sagging or the springs aren’t broken and bent. Many bed company’s have sales on before Christmas so check out bedstar online or one of the many other bed and mattress distributers on the Internet.

Make sure the bed has plenty of pillows and covers, not everyone regulates their body temperature the same, so make sure they can add or take covers away as necessary.

As it’s Christmas, it’s worth a look in the cheaper end shops or even charity shops for jolly Christmas items such as Reindeer cushion covers or even the odd Christmassy ornament. A well-placed red poinsettia is the perfect Christmas addition to any festive bedroom, and even a string of fairy lights over the bed won’t go unappreciated.

There’s no need to make the spare room look like Santa’s Grotto, but a few choice items can make you look like a superstar Christmas host and spread the festivities to all who stay there!
