If you only have 24 hours to visit Oxford what are you going to do? It’s not a huge city by any means but like all old cities, especially affluent ones, there is a staggering amount to see and do.
In order to see the best that Oxford has to offer you’re going to have to be choosy, and unfortunately that does mean you’ll miss some great things. But don’t worry. If you visit these places you’ll get more than just a flavour of what Oxford has to offer
1. Tour the Ashmolean. Oxford has a plethora of incredible museums and art galleries and the Ashmoleanis one of its best. The museum is home to an astounding variety of art, ceramics, sculpture and textiles from cultures around the world. The breadth of the collection is staggering and it would be easy to spend most of the day here, but don’t linger too long if you want to see much else in Oxford.
2. Visit The Bridge Of Sighs. This walkway connects two Oxford university buildings and is named for its supposed resemblance to the bridge of the same name in Venice (although it actually more closely resembles the Rialto Bridge in the same city). Stop to enjoy its beautiful architecture and maybe take a photo as a memento.
3. Enjoy Lunch At The Eagle And Child. This traditional pub must be the most famous in the city, mainly thanks to its association with authors and Oxford dons Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The two would meet here with other writers to share and read their latest works over a flagon of ale and a lung full of tobacco. Now a favourite haunt of students and locals, the pub serves quality ales and good pub grub.
4.Visit Oxford Castle. This castle was originally built by the Normans, and much of the existing stonework dates back to the 11th century. It was used as a prison right up until 1996, but has now been converted into a living museum with guided tours that explain the history of the castle. You’ll also find a restaurant and art gallery on the site.
5. Dine At The Big Bang. Located just near Oxford Castle, this restaurant offers delicious variations on traditional British cuisine and makes the ideal location for dinner after all your sightseeing. From bangers and mash where the sausages are made from boar and pigeon to traditional roast dinners you’ll get all the fuel you need for the evening’s entertainment.
6.Take In A Show At The New Theatre. The New Theatre plays host to some of the biggest and best stage shows in the country. There is a fine selection of musicals, comedies, ballet and live music to be had. So take your pick and enjoy.
