When it comes to influences of the British Royal family, George, Harry, and Archie are currently the top choices for baby names in England and Wales, new research has revealed.
With King Charles’ coronation just around the corner, the team at Heads and Tails Jewellery – makers of quality handmade coin jewellery – analysed baby name data from Office for National Statistics (ONS) to discover how the British Royal family have influenced baby name choices in England and Wales.
42 names were analysed in total – 20 boy names and 22 girl names – focusing on the current and most recent monarchy, including those in the line of succession and their wider family, such as their spouses and children (using both known and given names, where applicable). The most recent year of data was analysed in isolation (2021), as well as calculating total counts across the last 25 years (1996-2021) to discover which monikers have had longer term popularity and longevity.

Overall, based on the 10 names with the highest count in 2021, the top Royal-inspired baby names for 2021 included:
- George (Prince George of Wales) – 4,141 babies given name in 2021
- Harry (known name of The Duke of Sussex) – 3,089 babies given name in 2021
- Archie (Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor) – 2,928 babies given name in 2021
- Henry (given name of The Duke of Sussex) – 2,912 babies given name in 2021

“We also looked at some direct royal comparisons to see which names were most popular… Looking at recent monarchs, ‘Elizabeth’ was more popular than ‘Charles’, both in the 2021 data and in the 25-year calculations. When looking at the prince brothers, ‘Harry’ was more popular than ‘William’, again both in the 2021 data and in the 25-year calculations. However, when using his given name of ‘Henry’, his older brother proved more popular in the 25-year sums. Looking at their wives, both ‘Kate’ and her given name ‘Catherine’ were more popular than ‘Meghan’. When comparing Charles’ wives, ‘Diana’ was more popular than ‘Camilla’, again both in the 2021 data and in the 25-year calculations”.
