New research released today by travel money provider, John Lewis Finance has revealed the best European cities for free attractions over the Easter holidays.
With almost a third (30%) of UK adults never travelling over Easter due to the expense, John Lewis Finance analysed thousands of the top-rated free TripAdvisor attractions all throughout Europe across the Easter holidays, highlighting that there are ways you can make travelling a bit more affordable, even during peak holiday periods.
The best cities in Europe for free attractions
The research found that Assisi in Italy boasts the highest number of top-rated free attractions per capita, with 21 options to explore across an area with a population of just under 28,000 people. Following closely are Dubrovnik, Croatia, with 27 attractions and Chania, Greece, with 21.
1. Assisi, Italy
Known as one of the best-preserved mediaeval towns in the world, Assisi is an ideal Easter break destination, blending age-old traditions and lively celebrations. According to the research, top-rated free attractions include the Historic Centre, home to the captivating Basilica of St. Francis, built in 1228.
Over Easter, the town comes alive with distinctive Easter rituals, such as the centuries old Scavigliazione (also known as the “Deposition from the Cross”) and the moving Brotherhoods Procession on Good Friday evening, in which torches illuminate the city as the procession winds its way through the streets, adding a touch of magic to this historic town.
2. Dubrovnik, Croatia
Surrounded by crystal blue water, this Croatian town is one of the most popular destinations on the Mediterranean Sea. According to the research, one of the standout free attractions here is The Funky Wheels Tour. The tour has gained popularity among visitors who rave about its truly unparalleled experience—exploring the city alongside locals. This guided tour takes you to places you might not discover on your own, all while cruising in style aboard an iconic vintage car.
3. Chania, Greece
Mostly known for being an attractive beach spot, Chania is a surprisingly good choice for a city break as well. Amongst the research, one of the top-rated free attractions was found to be the Greek National Football Museum. Despite its modest size, the museum offers an impressive collection of memorabilia, artefacts, and an array of shirts, taking you through the rich history of Greek football.
