Top 10 picturesque trails to make your marathon training more enjoyable

There are over 200 races and marathons scheduled across the UK in 2024, with the London Marathon alone attracting nearly 50,000 runners to the capital each year. However, a 26-mile run is no easy feat – especially for the unprepared. So, there’s no doubt that many people across the country will be partaking in the arduous task of training each week for a future race day.

In fact, research from Mintel shows that out of those who have exercised in the last 12 months, 39% do so multiple times a week. But, going for a run on the same route several times a week can make even the most seasoned athletes lose motivation.

To help Brits change up their running routines in 2024, the experts at Wynsorshave created a list of the top 10 most picturesque running trails in the UK, to inspire aspiring race runners to try somewhere new when training – even if it’s just for one scenic run.

A peaceful oasis in the bustling Scottish city, Arthur’s Seat takes the top spot as the most picturesque running trail in the UK. The 3.3-mile Queen’s Drive loop around the ancient volcano is the perfect run for novices looking for an easy yet scenic route. Those with more experience can follow this loop and then head up Arthur’s Seat itself for a more challenging run.

The Jurassic Coast follows closely behind in second place, renowned for its spectacular beauty and fascinating heritage. The 95-mile stretch provides the perfect backdrop for those who need a boost of natural beauty to keep up with their race-day training. There are many picturesque running routes along this historic coastline that weave onto or off the South West Coast Path – such as the 13-mile loop starting in Kingston, passing through Kimmeridge and onto the coastal path, and looping back to the start.

Coming in third place is Lake Windermere. England’s largest lake at 10.5 miles long, the epic site features a multitude of incredible mountain views and pretty villages, ideal for experimenting with short and long runs. For those looking for a level run across mostly paved surfaces, try the 8.6-mile loop starting at Joey’s Café up to Wray Castle and back, along the left side of the lake.

To help both novice and seasoned marathon runners meet their race-day goals, Wynsors has also shared some tips to ensure that they are prepared for the big day:

  1. Gradually increase distance: One of the most crucial aspects of marathon training is gradually increasing your mileage over time. Start with a base level of fitness and slowly increase your weekly distance by no more than 10% each week. This gradual progression helps prevent injuries and allows your body to adapt to the increased demands of long-distance running.
  2. Incorporate strength training and cross training: While logging miles is essential, don’t overlook the importance of strength training and cross training in your marathon preparation. Incorporating exercises that target key muscle groups (such as your core, legs and glutes) can improve your running efficiency and reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, cross-training activities like cycling, swimming or yoga can help improve overall fitness whilst giving your running muscles a break.
  3. Invest in proper running shoes and attire: Wearing the right running shoes and attire is key for both comfort and injury prevention during training and on race day. Make sure to wear fitted running shoes that provide adequate support, cushioning and stability based on your foot type and running gait. Additionally, choose moisture-wicking and breathable clothing that fits comfortably and allows for freedom of movement. Properly fitting gear can help prevent blisters, chafing and discomfort, allowing you to focus on your training and performance.

For those who don’t want to break the bank when it comes to outfitting themselves for a marathon, Wynsors has a great selection of running trainers for men and women from reliable brands like On Running, Nike and Skechers – available to shop online or in-store.
